---Last night's Coverage ---

After 16 straight hours, I must call it a night. All of the information below is current as of 1:10am. Thank you for reading and goodnight.

As of 12:35am, much of south central Oklahoma has no electricity due to the terrible tornado outbreak. 42K "customers" = about 70,000 people.

Tornado Watches Posted Below. I believe these will be the last to be issued this morning, at least before 5am.

Both of the above tornado watches are in effect until 7am.

Tornado Watch until 7am. Numerous destructive tornadoes have occurred in southern and eastern Oklahoma since sunset. Marietta has been hit (closing I-35), Sulphur, Ardmore, Dickson and others with significant damage.
As the low pressure system and jet stream approach this area, the violent storms in Oklahoma may move toward this area. Make sure you have at least two ways to get the warnings!

Tornado Watch until 4am Sunday. It includes St. Louis, Quincy, Jefferson City and Columbia.

Tornado watch until 3am Sunday.

Latest tornado watch. This is in effect until midnight.

Tornado Forecast - Updated 8:10pm

  • Yellow = enhanced risk of strong tornadoes.
  • Brown = significant risk of tornadoes.
In addition, there is an extreme risk of giant hail (2" or larger) in the purple area.

Now is the time to put the car in the garage, take the outdoor furniture indoors and make sure your storm shelter is ready to go.

Remember, the best shelter is a safe room or a basement small room (if your basement is finished) or under heavy furniture such as a pool table. If you don't have a basement, go to a small room (closet or bath) in the middle of the house. The idea is to put as many walls as possible between you and the tornado. See the image below from Iowa yesterday.

If you live in a mobile home, a community shelter is best. You can find a map and addresses here

Please remember:
  • Have a least three independent ways of receiving tornado warnings.
  • Fresh batteries for your weather radio; fully charged smartphone and laptop but disconnect them when you first hear thunder (risk of power surge damaging the devices).
  • Turn the Wireless Emergency Alerts (on an iPhone, go to "Notifications" and scroll down to the bottom to "activate."
  • Make sure your storm sheltering area is ready to go (clear cobwebs, etc.), add a couple of bottles of water and diapers, if appropriate.
  • Always wear shoes into shelter. If the worst happens, you won't want to walk across broken glass and metal shards.
  • If a tornado watch is issued, move family heirlooms, etc., into the shelter at that time. Don't wait till the last minute. Remember, the watch is a forecast of tornadoes, a warning means it is time to take cover.
I will update this forecast around noon. Please forward the link to anyone in the threatened area.

I also provide real-time information on Twitter @usweatherexpert.
