Blizzard of Oz Moves Up to #2

Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport (official NWS observation site) is up to 14 inches which makes the Blizzard of Oz the #2 all-time storm. Note how my neighbor's exhaustively cleared driveway is already getting recovered.

  1. Mike, is the #1 all-time snow for Wichita still the blizzard of 1971? I'm not exactly sure of the year, but sometime back then there was a big snow. I remember, even though schools were effectively closed (no kid could even make it to the end of his driveway, let alone to the bus stop), our bus driver attempted to make it, but got caught in a snow drift close to a lake, the bus faltered and he unfortunately died of a heart attack. This was out in Springdale, a countryside neighborhood east of Wichita.

  2. The Blizzard of February 21, 1971, is probably the worst in terms of disruption to the city because of the very high winds. Prior to yesterday, it was #3 in terms of snow amount.

There was also a blizzard on Jan. 31-Feb. 2 either '81 or '82 that also crippled the city but Mid-Continent seemed to get less than other areas of the city so it does not rank as high as it should.
