Flooding Update

At the Smith House, our 24-hour rainfall ending at 7am was 1.74 inches. All of that fell after 6pm last night. The rain was greatly needed. Our lawn is "squishy" when you walk on it for the first time in more than a year.

Here is a map of 24-hour rainfall amounts across the Wichita-Sedgwick Co. area. Heavy amounts of more than two inches reported in the southeast part of the area.

Over a broader area, the green areas are an inch or more over the last 24 hours.

Thanks to a reader's heads up, the Peoria Star has an excellent article about the National Weather Service's great job anticipating and forecasting the current flooding. ADDITION: USA Today has a galley of flood photos here.

Snow continues to fall much farther south than usual for late April as indicated by AccuWeather Regional Radar at 7:36am. Schools are delayed in the northern part of Kansas and roads are slick in some areas. Goodland, Kansas received 7 inches of snow overnight.
Both Hayward and Piedmont Heights, MN received ten inches of snow.

Do you have the data to show how far below normal the Wichita temperatures are?

  4. Mike,

    I found them here.

Using the average High 68 deg and Low 45 deg and using the formula High T + Low T / 2, I found that so far we are 7.6 deg below normal.
