Next Weeks' Cold Wave

The map below is forecast temperatures for noon tomorrow:

A rush of arctic air is headed for the contiguous United States.

Here are forecast temperatures for 6am Wednesday (graphics by Ryan Maue). The temperatures over central Minnesota have moved to central Texas! In the northern Rockies, temperatures as cold as -30°F are forecast.
For cold waves:
  • If your furnace has not been used this season, check it now.
  • Fill your car's gas tank with fuel.
  • In some locations, temperatures will be colder when your children come home than when they go to school. Make sure they take adequate coats. Check the  AccuWeather  hourly forecast for your location.

  1. Mike...Some are calling this upcoming outbreak of cold air, a Polar Vortex. Does this meet that by definition?

  2. Hi Todd, there is a Polar Vortex and it exists (in the upper atmosphere, not the surface) throughout the year. So, yes, there is a PV but there is nothing remarkable about it.

This is going to be a major cold wave. More about it tomorrow.
