12:15pm MST Updated Southwest Flood Forecast - Serious Flooding Likely

After I prepared the forecast below, an updated rainfall amount forecast for Arizona came in.
More than 8" of rain is forecast to fall in there next three days! This may cause catastrophic flooding in a few spots with widespread serious flooding. Please see preparedness recommendations below.

This is the flash flood forecast valid from now until 8am MST. Right now, only scattered light showers are occurring in eastern Arizona but the rain will increase tonight.


The red areas have a high risk of flash flooding and river flooding. The yellow area will also have an elevated risk. 

In the strongest possible terms I urge you not to cross flooded areas by foot or by car. If you live in a low-lying or flood-prone area, please pack a go kit and be read to evacuate, if necessary.

The tornado forecast is unchanged from yesterday. The brown area has a significant risk of tornadoes and the hatching indicates they could be strong.  During the next three days, more than five inches of rain is forecast to fall in Iowa (orange).  The result is a serious flood risk over Iowa and into northwest Missouri in the dark blue. In the pale blue, there is a lesser flood risk.
