 2pm Update: Tropical Storm Warning, Blue 
Tropical Storm Watch (yellow) in San Diego Area

The NHC is now forecasting Rachel to move farther northwest than in previous forecasts. The latest model guidance has strong tropical storm forecast winds (up to about 70 mph on the immediate coast) in San Diego County.

Wider View:
Note: No strong winds are forecast for Los Angeles.

Flooding rains are possible in California and Arizona. 


It would not surprise me if a tornado or two occurred in Southern California. 

There will be high surf on the California coast, especially south-facing beaches.

The tornado forecast is unchanged from yesterday. The brown area has a significant risk of tornadoes and the hatching indicates they could be strong.  During the next three days, more than five inches of rain is forecast to fall in Iowa (orange).  The result is a serious flood risk over Iowa and into northwest Missouri in the dark blue. In the pale blue, there is a lesser flood risk.
