Re-Dedication of Ruskin Heights Tornado Memorial
Saturday at 10am, the reconstructed Ruskin Heights Tornado Memorial will be re-dedicated. The original memorial, pictured above, was destroyed when a car full of teenaged boys missed the corner at a high rate of speed and destroyed it.
We've spent the past year redesigning, overseeing and fund raising for the new memorial. Brad Smith (no relation) of KC Stone generously donated materiel and labor for memorial.
Saturday at 10am, there will be a rededication ceremony. Details are here. It will be at the intersection of Red Bridge and Blue Ridge Roads in south Kansas City (just south of Ruskin High School). After, there will be outdoor activities for children and other fun.
I will be speaking to explain how weather science saved lives that horrible evening. There will be new plaque added explaining how that evening was the first-ever government tornado warning. Of course, those warnings have saved thousands and thousands of lives during the past 60+ years.
