For Anyone Who Doubts Miracles or the Power of Prayer
On Wednesday, August 27, a transgender person shot through the window of Annunciation Church in Minneapolis during Mass killing two and wounding many others.
Among the most gravely wounded was 12-yr old Sophia Forchas who, according to news reports, was “virtually brain dead” when she arrived at the hospital. She had been shot through the temple. Her parents said they wanted us to “storm heaven with prayers” for their daughter and were confident she would recover even though news reports gave her very little chance.
Why "storm heaven with prayers"? Allow me to explain...
In order to become a saint recognized by the Catholic Church, a person must go through a four-level process. In the second step of the process is Blessed Father Emil Kapaun, a U.S. Army Chaplain who died caring for his troops while in captivity in North Korea in 1951. In order to signal that the person is in Heaven, the church requires a bona fide miracle to occur as a result of prayers requesting the "intercession" of the candidate for sainthood.
Intercession in Catholicism refers to the act of praying on behalf of others, asking God or saints to intervene and plead for them. It is seen as a way to express compassion and support for others, reflecting the belief in the communion of saints and the power of prayer.
Countless people prayed hard — fervently and daily — for Father Kapaun’s intercession for Sophia. About an hour ago, I happened to be viewing my Twitter feed and I was pleasantly shocked to see this. The video of Sophia running out of the limo to greet her friends brought tears to my eyes.
While we were prayerfully confident God would answer our prayers, never in a thousand years did I think she would be walking/running without aid at this point! More prayers are needed as she still has a ways to go. May God continue to bless Sophia, her parents, and the medical professionals caring for her.
I believe her walking to greet her classmates today is a genuine medical miracle accomplished, in part, through the intercession of Father Emil Kapaun. Whether the Vatican will agree, who knows?
Regardless, this should dispel any doubt as to the existence of miracles and the power of prayer.
