Central U.S. Flooding; Hawaii Nolo Updates
Central United States
The map is the seven day rainfall outlook. The bright amber color is five inch amounts and there will be locally more. While it is too soon to specifically pin down the more significant flooding areas, it will occur. Please monitor a trusted local weather source or this blog over the next few days.
Hawaii
While the hurricane watch continues for The Big Island and the tropical storm warnings continue for Hawaii, Maui and Lanai, I don't think wind will be the bigger problem. The issue will be flooding rains -- again -- on Hawaii where as much as 25" inches will occur. Major to catastrophic flooding will result, especially on the eastern half of the island. Please prepare now!
To follow the satellite moisture for Polo, keep an eye at https://cat.cira.colostate.edu/SPoRT/Layered/Advected/ALPW_Hourly.htm and especially the lower left and right hand panels of 700 to 500 and 500 to 300 hPa layers, respectively for that moisture that comes out of Polo in the tropical East Pacific and moves over Mexico and into the middle of the country and meets up with lower layers of moisture in the top two panels to spark the excessive rainfall. Also, you can keep an eye on things with our Blended Total Precipitable Water loop at https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/products/bTPW/product_animation.html?product=SUPER_NATIONAL_TPW&interval=hourly along with Experimental Advected Layer Precipitable Water Layer Vapor Transport at https://cat.cira.colostate.edu/ALPX/LVT/lvt.htm and Experimental Layer Precipitable Water Percentile Ranking at https://cat.cira.colostate.edu/ALPX/ALPW_Percentile/Percentile.html .
