1:45pm EST Sunday Winter Storm Update

Here is the latest depiction of the winter storm as of 1:36am EST. Twenty-four inches of snow are forecast to fall on Boston. Freezing rain with power failures (salmon color) is occurring in almost the exact areas where forecast. The orange is the tornado watch. 

I am providing addition updates on Twitter/X  @usweatherexpert. 

Here is the forecast of additional snow from 1pm EST to 6am Monday. 
Most every airport has major flight cancellations. Reagan and LaGuardia are closed. Check Amtrak before headed to the station. 

Speaking of the forecast, there were quite a few people on Twitter/X and elsewhere complaining that we had over-forecast the amount of snow. Some of them claimed only an inch or two was going to fall on Wichita. Similar comments were made about Kansas City. Wichita had 6.6" and southwest Kansas City had more than 5 inches. Looks like the forecast was correct, after all.
Generally, it is better to wait until the storm is over before criticizing the forecast.

2am While the risk of tornadoes may continue during the night, this will have to end my coverage.  Note the risk of tornadoes farther east later today.  1:35am Wednesday: Tornado watch will likely be issued for the outlined area, including the Kansas City Metro. "Particularly Dangerous Situation" - Update 5:35pm

A major windstorm is forecast for Oklahoma and Texas Sunday.  This has the potential to cause widespread power failures.  Please prepare now. More information below.  5:35pm:  Particularly Dangerous Situation watch due to wind gusts forecast to reach 105 mph and  with hail 5" in diameter. Tornadoes also possible.  If you live in a mobile home, now is the time to determine your sheltering situation. I urge you to shelter before warnings are issued (spend the evening with friends or family). Power outages are likely. A mobile vehicle from the National Severe Storms Laboratory has already measured a gust of 90 mph! 3:05pm Update: Computer models have consistently increased their forecasts of peak wind gusts pertaining to north central Texas this evening. Update (10:20p CST) Pertaining to the Major Winter Storm

Radar Image and Commentary as of 10pm (This is the last of the hourly updates for this evening.) Radar image from 10pm. Note the explosion of pink/salmon color from southeast Oklahoma across southern Arkansas. The following (blue) was written at 9p: I am increasingly concerned about more freezing rain over the southeast half of Arkansas than is currently being forecast. If you live in southeast Arkansas, I recommend making ice storm preparations now.  Radar, plus ground truth data from Arkansas weather stations, show the icing concern is well-founded.
