11:30am Blizzard Update

UPDATE 12:28PM All cars need to be off the roads by midnight in Massachusetts. Roads closed from then until further notice. I liked this tweet: -- ORIGINAL POSTING -- All roads in Connecticut are closed as of 9pm this evening. Snowfall forecast below still looks good. Below is the AccuWeather Regional Radar as of 11:30am. The storm will rapidly increase in intensity this afternoon and overnight.

click to enlarge The greenish shades are 22" or more. The highest snow amounts are in northeast Connecticut, northern Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts. The amounts around Boston will be in the 26 to 30 inch range. Add in the strong winds and you have a crippling storm. The latest AccuWeather Regional Radar: More than 3,000 flights have been cancelled. Here are some suggestions: Three important points: Power failures are possible. You could be snowed in for a considerable time.  You want nothing to do with this storm if you are traveling by air. Waivers have been issued, please see my  Airline Crisis Survival Guide (written in the wake of a similar blizzard) for excellent advice how to handle this situation.   So, what should you do if you live in this region? I've had a chance to look over new data that has come in during the last 15 minutes and I'm pretty happy with the snowfall forecast made earlier . So, that is going to wrap up coverage for tonight. NYT Figures Out a "Snowstorm" is Coming: "Stay Indoors"

The Times  is now telling readers that a "snowstorm" is on the way. How incisive.  I noticed this during Hurricane Sandy, too. The NYT seems to ignore what meteorologists say in favor of what the mayor of NY says. In this case, "stay indoors." And, they want people to pay for this quality of coverage?

Some News That's Not Fit to Print

Apparently, a full-fledged blizzard in NYC is not "news" (motto: "All the news that's fit to print.") to the New York Times . However, if some scientist, regardless of credentials, made a sensational global warming prediction for the year 2100, it would be front and center.

I have reviewed the information from the early afternoon computer models and I still like the forecasts posted immediately below. Scroll down. National Weather Service blizzard warnings have been issued for the areas in orange and winter storm warnings for the areas in pink. There is the potential isolated spots to receive 30" of snow with serious drifting. Check below for suggestions for storm preparations. Whatever you do, do not try to travel in this storm, including by air. This is a situation where you might have to sleep in an airport terminal for days.
