"Particularly Dangerous Situation" - Update 5:35pm

A major windstorm is forecast for Oklahoma and Texas Sunday.
This has the potential to cause widespread power failures.
Please prepare now. More information below.

5:35pm: Particularly Dangerous Situation watch due to wind gusts forecast to reach 105 mph and with hail 5" in diameter. Tornadoes also possible.
If you live in a mobile home, now is the time to determine your sheltering situation. I urge you to shelter before warnings are issued (spend the evening with friends or family). Power outages are likely. A mobile vehicle from the National Severe Storms Laboratory has already measured a gust of 90 mph!

3:05pm Update: Computer models have consistently increased their forecasts of peak wind gusts pertaining to north central Texas this evening. Wind gusts of 110 mph are possible. If correct, widespread power outages are likely.

First Watch of the Day Pertaining to the Derecho
In addition to the threat of tornadoes, wind gusts of 80 mph and softball-sized hail are forecast to occur.

A derecho is forecast to form in the area above and then move southeast toward the DFW Metroplex.

Damaging Wind Risk Now Until 3am CDT
Let me break down the illustration and then we will discuss it.
  • Purple, high risk of wind gusts of 60 mph or stronger.
  • Red, enhanced risk of wind gusts of 60 mph or stronger.
  • Yellow, significant risk of winds 60 mph or stronger.
  • Hatched is where wind gusts of 75 mph or stronger are forecast to occur. In this case, the NWS's Storm Prediction Center is forecasting peak wind gusts of 80 to 100 mph!
Tornado Risk
There is a significant risk of tornadoes in the brown area.

If this forecast is correct, there will be widespread power outages. So, please prepare now before the storms develop. In addition, with the wet ground in much of this area, there will be trees uprooted and considerable damage.
  • Think about, now, how you would handle three days without power.
  • Make sure your car is fully fueled. Gas pumps don't work without electricity.
  • Any prescriptions should be refilled if you are starting to run low.
  • If you live in a mobile home, please make plans -- now -- for alternative shelter. Use it before a warning is issued.
  • If you have a generator, make sure it is fully fueled.
  • Have at least three ways of receiving storm warnings. Start paying attention when a watch is issued.
  • Put trampolines, lawn furniture and anything that can be blown about indoors. This will keep them from crashing through your window.
Flooding is also a serious possibility, not only with this storm but with additional storms as the week progresses.

As always, I will also be updating later today on Twitter/X @usweatherexpert.
