Weather Bill Introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives

Image
Yesterday, a bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by Oklahoma's Rep. Ralph Lucas regarding amendments and additions to the 2017 weather bill that passed Congress. Per the above graphic, it was already passed out of committee. You can find the bill here .  The bill is extremely long and so "I went through it so you don't have to." 😏  Below, you will find brief summaries of the bill's features and my comments about each. Unfortunately, there is nothing about a National Disaster Review Board.  The usual people were writing that this bill would prevent the public from getting public forecasts and storm warnings. Of course, it does the opposite . The very first item is to emphasize the NWS's public safety mission with the emphasis on "public." Agree 100%. The NWS sometimes strays too far from its core mission and I was glad to see that emphasized.  With regard to the above, here are some specific items: There will be research money into ge...

President Trump Says Charlie Kirk Has Passed Away

Image
Charlie Kirk, a political commentator, husband and father of two young children, has passed away from a single shot in the neck.  I've watched numerous videos of his over the last couple of years and he was always cheerful and wise.  I cannot imagine the pain his family is experiencing.  Let's offer prayers for his soul and for his family. God Bless the United States of America.

Pilots: A Tragic Aircraft Accident and a Reminder

Image
The current issue of Flying  writes up a tragic weather-related aviation accident over the skies of Kentucky. A Piper aircraft, flying at night, encountered a severe thunderstorm near Whitesville which led to the plane breaking up in-flight. There is an important lesson here for all pilots regarding the use of ground-based radars.  The wreckage of the doomed flight.  The article links to the National Transportation Safety Board's report and probable cause finding. Knowing we have a number of pilots among our readers, I thought a few comments would be helpful in avoiding this type of accident in the future. The article about the accident is here .  The plane departed Bowling Green enroute to Owensboro. The pilot posted the screen capture below to his social media account. The radar was from 11:15pm, 34 minutes before the crash.  The airplane symbol was the then-current position of the aircraft. At the end of the purple line was the planned destination, the Owens...

Climate Change: Sea Level is NOT Rising as Forecast

Image
More than 20 times since the creation of this blog in November 2009 we have questioned the prevailing wisdom of catastrophic sea level rise due to climate change. We pointed out -- example here -- that the actual levels of the sea were and are well below the level of the forecasts by Big Climate.  I am happy to report there is a new, peer-reviewed paper making the same point: sea levels are not  rising as forecast. You can find the paper here .  Big Climate especially likes the sea level rise hypothesis because they make the case that "reparations" need to be paid by advanced nations to island nations and to poor nations. In the process, plenty of $$ comes to Big Climate.  Regardless, this is very good news.

Why the National Weather Service Needs to Be Made an Independent Agency

Image
The NOAA/NWS computer modeling used to be #1 in the world. Now, we are distant #4. NOAA is focused on its marine responsibilities and not weather. We would be far better off with the NWS as an independent agency. My recommendations are here .

Weather Controversy in Philadelphia

Image
As everyone knows, there was a well-founded lightning delay during the Dallas v Eagles game this evening. Unfortunately, there was false info posted on the scoreboard. Read from the bottom, up. I don't know where they got the "severe thunderstorm warning" information. but they never should have posted it because it causes confusion for all concerned. The NWS in Mt. Holly, which covers Philadelphia, put out a tweet explaining no severe thunderstorm warning was in effect. Every professional sports team should have a dedicated private sector meteorologists. It prevents this type of issue from occurring.
