WSJ: What Went Wrong in the Philippines

Meteorologists thought we had issued excellent warnings . The Wall Street Journal  has a superbly reported story about what went wrong in the Philippines with the warnings of Typhoon (they called) Yolanda. Here is what the storm surge looked like. I think  people in the U.S. know a storm surge acts like a tsunami, but do they? Feel free to chime in. This is why social scientists can help us make storm warnings more effective.

Update on Southern Plains Winter Storm

As much as ten inches of snow is already on the ground in parts of Oklahoma. Here is the AccuWeather Regional Radar at 11am. Heavy snow is falling in parts of the Oklahoma City area right now. Oklahoma road conditions are here . Texas road conditions are here . There will be icy weather in the Metroplex shortly. Winter storm warnings are in pink. More will be issued farther east later in the afternoon. There is a pretty good chance of ice storm conditions from parts of the Tennessee River Valley into the parts of the Appalachians. Here is a first look at where the heaviest precipitation is expected between now and 6pm Tuesday. This storm will disrupt early Thanksgiving travel. Here is the latest AccuWeather Regional Radar 8:05am CST. As much as eight inches of snow is forecast to fall in southwest Oklahoma. And, here are the NWS winter weather warnings: Pink is a winter storm warning. Violet is a winter weather advisory (a lesser condition than a warning).

Thanksgiving Week Weather

In a word: Cold! if you happen to be east of the Rockies. It looks like the coldest Thanksgiving in at least 13 years. Here is a map of temperatures for Thursday morning as compared to normal: Dr. Ryan Maue, click to enlarge The purple from Texas up into Pennsylvania and across New York and New England is more than 22° below normal. It will be a wet week in the South and East. Here is the forecast precipitation for the next seven days. There will be ice and snow at some of the airports in this region. And, from AccuWeather , here is the map for Wednesday, the biggest travel day of the year: If you are planning to travel, be proactive!!  Being proactive these days is the difference between getting to your destination and having a ruined holiday. L.A. Weather Weenies

Until the last few years, I used to go to Southern California 4-6 times/year on business. I've been there many times during rainy periods and they are treated like a catastrophe. This piece is not  an exaggeration. Definition of hot weather in Los Angeles? 73° or warmer. Definition of cold weather in Los Angeles? 71° or colder. Enjoy!
