I came across Steve Martin's first major television appearance the other day.  [Johnny]  This clip is really, really old. [Audience]  How, old, is, it? [Johnny]  It is so old that Steve Martin has brown hair! Enjoy!

Johnny Carson, who retired in 1992, was known as the "King of Late Night," a title he still retains. Based on what has aired after late local news in the last 30+ years, his title will never be challenged.  In addition to host Johnny Carson, the cast included sidekick Ed McMahon and bandleader Doc Severinsen. Johnny and Ed had amazing chemistry and produced some of the funniest moments in the history of television. But the night before Thanksgiving 1979, Ed (who used to deliver Publisher's Clearinghouse prize checks) was off for the holiday and it was Johnny and Doc. Keeping in mind all of this was extemporaneous, hold on before you split your side laughing. 

1978 and 1979 had the two best bits of television programming pertaining to Thanksgiving -- ever. In our first commemoration, we are going to look at the payoff of the "Turkey's Away" episode of WKRP in Cincinnati which first aired October 30, 1978. WKRP  was about a struggling rock 'n roll radio station. This episode surrounds a promotion thought up by "The Big Guy," station manager Arthur Carlson (played by Kansas State alumnus, the late Gordon Jump) to prove to the staff that he still "had it."  By the way, Turkeys Away  was based on a true story . 

How does The Simpsons  keep getting it right over and over again? 

After the tornadoes and flooding of last week I thought it would be fun to take a break.  I've always been a Johnny Carson fan and when I saw one of his old (1960's) shows on YouTube, I watched. Among his guests last night was the great Stan Freberg. He was known for his wacky, and highly effective, television commercials (among other things). For those of you who have never seen one, here are a couple of treats. Please note: in that era, 60 second TV commercials were the norm. Meatballs! Soup! A Commercial For Advertising on Radio Stan produced comedy albums, radio comedy serials (who can forget "Chickenman"?) and far more. He passed away in 2015.

...to believe a 'warning' is needed by viewers of the greatest comedy of all time, Blazzing Saddles. Mongo is likely weeping over HBO's decision to add one. As a person who proudly lives two miles south of Rock Ridge, I agree with these statements on Twitter: Below, Daisy has the right idea.  However, there is a short list of people who probably do need a disclaimer. I first became a fan of Carl Reiner in his role as Alan Brady, the megalomaniacal star of The Alan Brady Show, the show-within-the-show of the "Dick Van Dyke Show." In this piece, Mary tries to apologize to Alan after accidentally telling the world he is bald -- which was supposed to be top secret. It is comedy at its best. Rest in peace, Mr. Reiner. And, thanks for the laughs!

Marine biologist, err climate scientist, George Constanza lashed out against EPA administrator Scott Pruitt for having the audacity to say, among other things: "Whether we now know the ideal temperatures in the year 2100. It is 'fairly arrogant' for us to think that we know exactly what it would be in 2100." "We know humans have most flourished during times of warming trends." Pruitt also questioned our ability to make a forecast 82-years in the future.  Considering climate science cannot make consistently skillful forecasts 82- days  into the future, I think George needs to chill (pun intended) a little bit.
