An outstanding article from The Atlantic as to why narrowly focused PhD's and other experts are often not good at prediction.
When looking to hire an innovator look for two traits: curiosity and passion. In addition to the functional expertise, does the candidate have a wide range of interests? Ask what he/she often reads. Do they belong to groups outside of their area of focus?
