Later in the week, heavy - likely flood producing - rains will fall in the Southland.  Here is the 5-day forecast of rainfall/liquid content of snow. That is 21" of snow in the mountains where you see the pink. Much of the precipitation will be in the form of rain which is unexpected in late December. Texas: we don't want a repeat of the catastrophic Valentine's Weekend Winter Storm and Cold Wave that took hundreds of lives. So, I am starting my forecasts for this storm a bit earlier than usual in hopes of alerting everyone so they can take protective measures in sufficient time to mitigate the risks of cold, ice and snow.  Overview Above is the probability of 4" or more snow and/or  a quarter inch of freezing rain or sleet. This product (NWS) did well in the early states of the forecasts for the weekend blizzard and ice storm that is now moving out into the Atlantic.  ERCOT, which runs Texas' electric grid is alerting people to the impending storm and "higher electrical demand and the potential for lower reserves." Snow continues to call from the Ohio Valley to DelMarVa's Peninsula. Washington, DC has recorded 5.5 inches, so far.  Winter storm warnings are in effect for the region. Late Update at 10pm Blizzard warning now includes the entire KC Metro In Kansas, power outages are increasing rapidly. That will continue tonight and Sunday. Radar at 10pm Precipitation across the area is increasing geographically. There are many areas of drizzle in eastern Kansas that are not being depicted because radar does not detect drizzle well.  We are now starting to see power outages in Kansas with about 1,000 homes and businesses without power . It will only go downhill from here.  The forecasts depicted below still look good. There is an update pertaining to the ice storm here .  Let's begin with an overview: Dark turquoise is a winter storm watch for heavy snow or ice. The purple areas from Iowa to the east are for today's snow.
