If I were one of the residents being told it will be "fall of 2024" before the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) report is issued, I would be furious.
Having worked with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the Federal Railroad Administration, and having been part of a number of non-government aviation accident investigations, the 3+ year NIST timeline is completely unacceptable. The NTSB has to deal with situations where pieces of a plane are missing or even miles under an ocean surface. Yet they, almost always, get their investigations finished in a year or slightly more. In the cases of Champlain Towers, all of the pieces were on-site.
The State of Florida is also doing an investigation and the fact the feds will not allow the state investigators to access the remains is extremely odd. I suspect that NIST will delay Florida as not to be upstaged.
Meanwhile, as 60 Minutes reported, other condo owners in the area are understandably concerned that their lives and property could be in danger. If I were Congress, I would be demanding answers.
