5:05pm Friday: Update on Nate

Image
Here is the National Weather Service's latest forecast of the path of Nate. The eye of what will likely be Hurricane Nate will come ashore in the red (hurricane warning) area. High winds will begin along the Louisiana coast after about 4pm Saturday and elsewhere after 6pm. Right now, it looks like the sustained winds will be around 85mph at landfall with gusts to 95 mph. Here is the forecast rainfall. That is 10.3" near Asheville. Serious flooding will result. So What Do I Do Now? Here are my suggestions.  Get them done immediately! Get prescriptions refilled now. This will be the case the rest of the afternoon and evening, posing a threat to high school football in the region. Note: This will be my last lightning-related post. Risky weather may affect some venues this evening.  If you are in any of the colored areas below, you are at risk for lightning from roughly 4pm through 10pm this evening (the storms will be moving east after 10pm). Please make sure you have a lightning sheltering plan for players and fans and  a way to communicate that plan quickly.  In addition to the lightning threat, there is also the threats of hail in the red/orange/gold areas of Kansas and Texas with very  large hail possible, along with a tornado or two, in the gold area of southwest Kansas. I expect these storms to begin sometime after about 4pm. Make sure you have sheltering capabilities and a way to convey any warnings that might be issued.  If you are in southwest Kansas within about 20 miles of the red/gold areas, keep a special eye on the weather the rest of the day.
