May We Stop the Politics??

Far left reporter Seth Borenstein wrote yesterday afternoon:

It is true that cutting the wrong parts of the NWS and NOAA will imperil lives. But it is untrue that nothing can be cut.

The cartoonist and cartoon have already been cut. This wasn't NOAA's mission (doesn't the U.S. have a Department of Education?) and it should never have been started.

But, there is plenty more. Yesterday morning, a highly produced video crossed my twitter feed. As I understand it, it was produced in-house.
When did this become part of NOAA's mission? It isn't!

Allegedly, this is (at right) what NOAA spent the past year on outside video support.

And, this came across my LinkedIn feed last week:
Considering that online puzzles are being played while DOGE is shining a light on NOAA/NWS, one must wonder what else is occurring that we don't know about.

And, as Dr. Ryan Maue, former Chief Scientist for NOAA, writes:
The National Weather Service is a critical agency that is absolutely necessary to our nation's safety and economy. But the idea there is nothing that can be cut is absurd (although most of the cuts should be at NOAA, there is very little fat in the NWS).

I wish the atmospheric science profession would go on offense: offer up some of these silly expenditures and programs and vigorously defend what is essential (which is the vast majority of the NWS). Unfortunately, both sides seem to be more interested in politics at the moment.
