Heads Up This Weekend - Update 3:50pm Wednesday

An unusually strong low pressure system is going to cause adverse weather between the Rockies and the Appalachians starting Friday.

I -- strongly -- urge you if you are in the tornado risk areas outlined below that you prepare for a possible tornado outbreak from Friday afternoon to Saturday night. This includes the potential for overnight tornadoes Friday night.

Winter Storm
Blizzard conditions are likely in parts of Minnesota and the Dakotas Friday into Saturday night. Road closures are likely. A few power outages are also possible.

Tornadoes and Damaging Winds

Let's start with Friday.
Preliminary forecast: In the hatched area north of the Missouri River/Interstate 64 the primary threat will be wind gusts of 75 mph or stronger with a powerful line of thunderstorms. A few tornadoes are also possible.

South of I-64, there will be a higher chance of tornadoes, some of which could be strong. Damaging thunderstorm winds are also possible.

On Saturday:
Preliminary forecast: If things come together in the wrong way, I'm quite worried about the tornado potential, especially in the amber area. If you live in the South, please plan to monitor the weather and have your tornado preparations complete for the entire day (including the pre-dawn) Saturday.

High Winds
Strong winds likely in the central U.S.A. with dust storms quite possible in parts of Texas and New Mexico.

Of course, I will update these forecasts as appropriate.
