Catastrophic Flooding in Houston Metro

Image
Via Twitter moments ago: Harvey has brought catastrophic rains with two-day rainfalls exceeding 20 inches in much of the city and surrounding areas. At one point last night: And, even more heavy rain is forecast! Here is the five-day rainfall amount forecast: Yes, that is an additional 20 inches for the southwest part of the Houston-Galveston area with a 25" maximum near Victoria. Already rivers are exceeding record crests. The flooding will be unprecedented. I congratulate Houston Metro for proactive risk mitigation!!

Sunday Fun?

Because of the catastrophe of Hurricane Harvey, I have deleted this week's feature.

Here is the storm as of 9:15am. Winds are still gusting to nearly 100 mph. The red colors are  torrential rains.  Here is an idea of how much rain has fallen. The pink below is a forecast of 20+" of additional rain. Unfortunately, this has just begun.

Last Update of the Night

Image
I believe this tweet is extremely appropriate tonight. There are meteorologists tonight that are working 13-hour shifts and sleeping on air mattresses. Tragically, we are getting reports of collapsed buildings in Texas and the worst is yet to come. The automatic weather station at the Corpus Christi airport has ceased operating. I have seen measured wind gusts as high as 131 mph. Again, the worst is likely yet to come. This is going to be it for me tonight. It has been a very long day.

10pm Hurricane Harvey Update

Image
The pressure has dropped three more millibars to 938mb. Lightning is occasionally being picked up which means it is holding intensity or, perhaps, getting a little stronger. Radar, below, is from 9:50pm. Sustained winds are 130 mph. It is very near landfall but slight additional strengthening is possible.

9pm Harvey Update

Wind gusts to 120 mph measured at Aransas Pass, TX. Twenty-four foot waves measured off the coast. Radar 8:55pm. Corpus Christi at lower left.
