From the very beginning of this blog, we have warned of natural hazards like ice storms, tornadoes, tsunamis and others. And, since at least 2011, we have warned of a Carrington Event or an electromagnetic pulse bomb in the upper atmosphere -- either of which would take out the electric grid...likely for weeks or months.  A number of publications have written about the mass cellphone outage the last few days have written about this topic . But, here's the problem: Presidents Obama and Trump appointed commissions to study this truly existential problem and recommend solutions. But, then, little happened.  So the question is: Will the United States wake up and fortify the grid before the next Carrington Event occurs.  And, will you put away at least a week of water and food (that won't spoil) away?

Wall Street Journal The Journal  has written a fine article pertaining to the catastrophic consequences of a Carrington Event (solar storm) or a wartime electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) which would knock out the power grid in the half the earth facing the sun or the targeted area, respectively.  There is no paywall in this version of the article and I urge you to read it. Presidents Bush, Obama and Trump all had groups study this but not much was done. The "tabletop exercise" described in the article is better than nothing but hardly want is needed to prevent this tremendous catastrophe.  Consider what the world would be like if North and South America were facing the sun when a Carriinton Event occurred. Both continents would immediately lose power -- likely for years . People would starve to death, almost all of the critically ill people in hospitals would quickly die, etc. etc. Deaths would be in the tens of millions. Saturday, I posted a piece titled " Well, This is Terrifying... " on the extreme danger posted by solar storms to America (especially) and the world.  Meteorologist Roger Edwards brought the article, Racing the Sun to Protect America  to my attention. Posted Friday, it outlines the danger to GPS and to America should a strong solar storm occur.  If you think the COVID shortages of 2020 or the gas shortages of last week were bad, the problems would be far, far worse if a solar storm (CME) should occur.  With a Carrington intensity solar storm there is a chance your car will be dead (literally) along with many appliances that contain chips or are connected to commercial power. Apparently, the "experts" (I put it italics because I'm not sure that anyone is a true expert in forecasting space weather) were greatly surprised over the solar storm earlier this week.  See article here . There are a number of useful items in the comments.  We've talked about this too many times to count: if we have a major Carrington Event (named after a violent solar storm in 1859). If that would occur today, we would go back to 1860 without  the infrastructure of 1860. Deaths will be in the tens of millions -- conservatively.  Yet, the U.S. government worries about everything but the really important problems. 

An EMP Attack Would Take the United States Back to the 1870's Without  the Infrastructure  We Had in the 1870's. Millions Will Die. A Carrington-Type Solar Storm or  an EMP attack would destroy the electrical power grid. With our "just-in-time" inventories, etc., there would be no electricity, no water, no sewage treatment, and food would run out very quickly. In winter there would be no heat and no air conditioning in summer. Hurricane Maria, by itself, has caused major problems with medicine supplies.
