Current Climate Conference in Brazil: "Love Motels" to the Rescue [With Added Bulletin]

Image
The private jet-set, bacchanal-like meeting known as COP 30 has been in progress in Brazil. Of course, the environmentalists had to cut down thousands of rain forest trees to create a highway for the conference.  There were concerns about a shortage of rooms. Not to worry! The "stripper pole" and blacked out windows are a nice touches. Sheesh.   Fifteen years ago, when the annual conference was in Copenhagen, some working girls offered free services to the delegates . Perhaps that is the reason attendance is down this year.  Remember: they are spending these tax dollars and attending this conference for our good! BULLETIN........BULLETIN.........BULLETIN..........BULLETIN  (5pm Friday) So, let me get this straight: when you and I use air conditioning, it has an " outsized effect on the climate " and needs to be cut back. But, when the jet-setting delegates to the global warming conference don't have enough cooling, that is a crisis that needs immediate attentio...

Why Are Universities Non-Profit for Tax Purposes?

Image
Sports Illustrated  Each school will receive $135 million as a result of the "capital deal" in addition to the $80 to $100 million each school receives year from TV rights.  Exactly why should these universities be non-profit? This "capital deal" -- selling assets that were originally paid for by taxpayers -- is as money grubbing a deal as any private sector company would make. Football is hardly a key academic activity. Universities also have endowments, sometimes worth billions, that also receive preferential tax treatment.  Before anyone says, "universities are engaged in public service," so was my company WeatherData, Inc. (we directly saved hundreds of lives) but the government wouldn't let us be non-profit.  Below are comments regarding last week's 60 Minutes'  weekly "Trump is evil" report that he allegedly shut down breast cancer research. This "overselling" over university research potential is, unfortunately, qui...

Dangerous Rains in Southern California

Image
In the mountains north and west of Los Angeles as much as ten inches of rain is forecast to fall by the National Weather Service during the next five days. If this forecast is correct, there will be flooding and mudslides, especially in burn scar regions. It is essential that preparations be made now, in the hours before the heavy rains arrive.  Below is location-specific information.  Note:  For those of you who may have looked at the NWS's "National Flood Hazard Outlook," I disagree with its "limited" hazard forecast. If these extreme rainfall amounts materialize, the flooding will be quite serious.  Here is the radar at 12:20pm PST.
