Potomac River "Blows Out"

Image
At latest count, more than 3,000,000 people are without power this morning as a result of Friday's storm. This occurred as a result of the Friday hyper-windstorm. The water in the Potomac River "blew out." The photo was taken near Washington, DC. The entire story is here .  The photos below were taken near Boston. Incredible sights.

Northern Great Plains Blizzard Possible

Image
Scroll down if you live in the Northeast and want to see information regarding short-term mitigation/recovery from the hyper-storm.  Ho, boy, what a week! It now looks like a blizzard -- with areas of 8 to 18 inches of snowfall -- combining with wind gusts to 60 mph will affect the Northern Plains beginning Sunday night. Below is the forecast for 6am Monday. Blue is where it is forecast to be snowing with darker blues corresponding to heavier rates of snowfall. Here is a first guess as to snowfall. In fact, it is possible areas could see severe blizzard conditions. I expect winter storm/blizzard watches to be posted Saturday or Saturday night.

For Storm Recovery Planning

This is an important point: The power will be out in some areas for days or even weeks. I believe that too many got a late start in dealing with this storm if the absence news coverage -- even as late as this morning -- is any indication. In the past hour, three weather observing stations in eastern Massachusetts have reported wind gusts above 90 mph.  Because of the lack of power, raw sewage is flowing in four areas of New Jersey. Because the damage is so geographically widespread, it is going to take time just to get crews from across the nation into the affected area to start restoring power. Why is this important? If you are weighing whether to move to a hotel, it is quite possible the power will be out longer rather than shorter, especially if you are in one of the areas with the strongest winds.  This storm is so severe that I would not count on deliveries tomorrow, regardless of delivery promises.  If you are without power, it is possible your nearby pha...

They May Have to Burn the Plane

Below is what meteorologists call a PIREP which is short for "in-flight report from pilots." It refers to a flight landing at Washington Dulles in the powerful storm in progress in the Northeast (scroll down). I believe it speaks for itself. UPDATE : 3:45PM Eastern. The reports (and, there are many more than these two) keep coming in. Below (scroll down) you will find a headline from yesterday pertaining to this storm. It reads, I just don't get the airlines. I friend of mine is in serious danger of missing Hamilton  on Broadway tomorrow because of a last minute flight cancellation. What do they think they are gaining by treating their customers poorly and imposing utter chaos on their own flight networks??
