Climate Change: The 'Cure' Is Usually Worse Than the Disease

Image
The Telegraph  is hardly a conservative newspaper. You will find this story to be of vital interest .  The Nation of Uganda is one of the worst in one of recent world history. Christians are being slaughtered. People starving. "Do gooders" making their lives miserable.  As we have pointed out on a number of occasions, far too much 'climate' money has gone to rich, well-connected political donors. As the Telegraph  writes: The Telegraph can reveal that taxpayer money has also been spent on programmes accused of human rights abuses and for solar panels for one of the world’s richest hotel chains. Much of the money spend on climate programs is grift. Wind power is a terrible boondoggle not to mention the hugely expensive batteries and transmission wires that wind power proponents want to paper over the times the wind is too light (6 mph or less) to turn the wind turbines. It is a meteorological fact  winds are often calm or too light when it is very cold and very h...

[Updated] Environmental Extremists: They Don't Like Animals and They Don't Like People

[Update]  You can always count on the climate catastrophists to fall in line: --- original post --- I think the headline speaks for itself. I think the planet can handle Fido and Lucy without too much difficulty.

Global Warming: Is There Anything It Can't Do?!

Image
Good morning, everyone. For unexpected reasons, I am not able to write new content this morning, so I am moving this up by one day. Hope you find it interesting.  I simply can't imagine why anyone reads The New York Times.  So many of its global warming stories are just wrong.  Dead from weather-related disasters have decreased, not increased. See the graph below.  The above puts the lie to the story regardless of the additional fact that weather-related disasters and subsequent deaths are not decreasing due to climate (discussion here ). I suppose there will always be people who want to signal their virtue by reading the Times  but I can't imagine people read it for quality climate journalism.

People Around the World Turn to This Blog For Quality Weather and Science Information

The blue dots are where blog readers were located about an hour after this afternoon's crash landing in Toronto.  And, three hours later: As with the tragedy of American 5342 that collided with a helicopter and crashed in Washington January 29, people from all over the world came to this site by the thousands.  It is always our goal to provide the finest information without hype. Thank you for reading and trusting us.

The Latest Journalistic Nonsense About NOAA

Image
This was published Tuesday.  This, published yesterday, is the first 12 paragraphs of the above.  The full article is behind a paywall and I have been able to read only about half, but there are so many similar articles floating around the media these days that I can pretty well figure out what the rest says.  The (strongly left-leaning) Bloomberg wants to convey the impression that weather forecasting and storm warnings are a federal government monopoly. They aren't; not even close. The article has all of the hallmarks of originating within NOAA in a desperate attempt to stave off the major changes most everyone in the field knows need to be made. Note that in the first 11 paragraphs (all that are available before the paywall) there isn't a single non-NOAA source.  Left-wing reporters at left-wing organizations, especially in Washington, will generally take federal agency press statements and run with them. But NOAA has never been a monopoly or even a real leader in...

"It Has Become an Intellectually Lazy Field, Compounded By an Incurious Press That Never Pushes Back"

Image
The past month has clarified how Big Climate colludes with and has become imbedded in America's mainstream news media, literally. These organizations "embed" their activists in newspapers and other new organizations, even my hometown Wichita Eagle. You'll recall even while Helene and Milton were ramping up, I was writing about Big Climate getting its press releases ready which the media would publish practically verbatim. Others have noticed. Sure enough... With the permission of Dr. Ryan Maue (PhD in Tropical Meteorology from Florida State University and former Chief Scientist for NOAA), I'm reproducing a recent tweet of his. Yet, "climate change is causing worse hurricanes" is not the position of mainstream climate science! I'll present that in a moment.  A meteorology student, Chris Martz, has noticed the same thing. With permission, I'm reproducing a tweet of his: Evidence of global warming: • Tornadoes in Tornado Alley occurring in tornado ...

Global Warming: Is There Anything It Can't Do?!

Image
More climate absurdity : While our changing climate features more heat (in the 1.5 years, primarily due to the water vapor increase caused by the Tonga Volcano), per the IPCC, there is no increase in flooding. If you don't wish to wade through hundreds (literally) of pages, go to Table 12.12 in their latest report.  The above said, bridges are built with expansion joints to deal with extreme heat.  This story is a bad combination of climate alarmism propaganda with an attempt to make Vice President Harris look by increasing climate concern.

Climate Scam: Even Progressives Are Catching On

Image
The Guardian  is a far left newspaper but even they are -- finally -- catching on to the climate scam and the graft that goes with it.  For the umpteenth time: humans affect the climate and we need to decarbonize energy using nuclear.  But most of the papers on the subject of global warming and most of graft-filled schemes proposed are just  junk that waste money and resources. Have you noticed that none of these people ever defines what victory against climate change looks like? All we are doing is spending trillions  on practically nothing.

Why Does the Media Feel It Has to Jump When Big Climate Issues a Press Release?

Image
I'm so old I remember when journalists were proud to think of themselves as "independent." Now, it is all "follow the narrative." That is a shame for a once-proud profession and it is a shame for America -- which needs quality, independent journalism.  I was looking for a story about St. Louis yesterday  evening (~6pm) and this is what my search engine produced. Climate wasn't even on my mind at the time. See any similarites? The "water fight" story in question is loaded with the words "could," "might," and other weasel words. There is not a single comment that doesn't contribute to the climate alarmist narrative. It is yet another piece of global warming propaganda.  The Gold Standard of climate doesn't even think drought and floods powered by climate are a problem, if at all, until 2050. See Table 12.12 from the IPCC's latest report below, "Wet and Dry." More and more I wonder if media companies are paid ...

Sunday Feature: Review of "In the Eye of the Storm"

Image
This Discovery Channel series, In the Eye of the Storm, depicts major storms and storm situations across the United States. It did a pretty good job (grade B) but it really needed a meteorologist-editor because there were so many unnecessary errors that were, at least to this meteorologist, annoying. I'm hoping that there will be a second year and I offer some suggestions for improvement.  A recurring minor annoyance. Use of a backward hurricane symbol (it shows clockwise rotation rather than counterclockwise which occurs in the Northern Hemisphere) when discussing tornadoes and other types of storms. Example below. It would be better not to use a hurricane symbol when discussing tornadoes.  In the episode about the horrible Buffalo blizzard of 2022 (47 killed in Buffalo, 100+ total from the blizzard), there was a story about wonderful people who went out into the extreme cold and snow to rescue a man who was freezing and trapped. They asked for help to get him to a hospital ...

We Have Been Out of Town for a Few Days....

Image
... so I DVR'd Discovery's  Eye of the Storm  about the 2023 Rolling Fork MS Tornado. That was a terrible EF-4 intensity storm that killed 17 people. A number of those who perished were in a mobile home park. There was some unusual video of this tornado that was online right after, so I was looking forward to the documentary.  Unfortunately, the presentation was marred by the "no warning" canard. Above is a screen capture (they were showing the tornado approaching).  The most unusual video online immediately after the storm showed what appears to be two separate lights (autos with their lights on?) apparently rotating around the tornado. My guess is there were at least 100 feet above the ground. I was hoping they would analyze this unusual video and explain the source of the lights. They didn't, at least not to my satisfaction.  While I generally recommend the documentary, if you would like the true story with regard to the excellent forecasts and warning for Ro...

Congratulations MSNBC!

Image
The headline of this piece is two words I never thought I would write. That said, let's give credit where it is due! Yesterday, I wrote about the odious coverage of the attempted assassination by a number of news outlets. Given the amount of hate that spews each morning from Morning Joe , it is a solid, responsible decision to pull it this morning. Let's stop the insults and cover the genuine issues going forward.  Thank you, MSNBC. Keep up the good work! While on the topic, after posting yesterday's piece I became aware of the Washington Post's  horrible full-page attack on former President Trump published yesterday -- the day after  he was shot.  I can't understand why Jeff Bezos allows this to continue, especially yesterday. I cancelled my subscription last night

The Media's Vile Assassination Coverage

Image
I wanted to allow things to cool a bit before following up on yesterday’s near-assassination of former President Trump. Now is the time for some essential points to be made.  Because I hear from them more often than I do the R’s and C’s that read this blog, I know we have many D and L readers. Some of them are wonderful people, even friends. But it is time for those whose politics are on the left side of the aisle to do some serious soul searching -- and it is time to do so without, “Well, but…..!’s.” R’s and, especially, C’s in the Trump era have gone from disliking the mainstream media to, in many cases, despising it. Consider the front page of this morning’s  Denver Post: ·        The Headline:  Their concern is over the  gunman  not the former President nor the people struck by the would-be assassin’s bullets; a former fire chief (who died shielding his daughter) and the two who were seriously injured. Let this sink in: T...

The Wall Street Journal Is in the Tank For Climate Alarmism

Image
As a subscriber for decades, I'm really sorry to report that The Wall Street Journal  is now all-in for climate alarmism stories in their news coverage. Recently, they've been printing alarmist stories about once a week. Yesterday's story was about derecho's  -- headline above -- and the one that affected Houston on May 16. One of claims made in the stories is that the airports only had just 60 to 90 minutes of advance notice -- which simply isn't true. Nor are derecho's connected to climate change.  The National Weather Service did a fine job with their forecasts of damaging winds in the Houston area May 16, the day of the derecho. Their 11:33am severe wind forecast had Houston in the "enhanced" area -- more than six hours before the wind arrived. A tornado watch was out at 2:40pm (above) -- more than 3.5 hours before the winds arrived -- plenty of notice to take mitigation actions. If the airport officials weren't paying attention, that is not th...

Yesterday's Singapore Airlines' Fatal Turbulence Encounter - Updated

Image
The location of the 777 about one minute after the encounter. The bright white clouds are thunderstorms. At 3:07am (CDT) yesterday, a Singapore Airlines 777 enroute from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence during which (per FlightAware data) the plane suddenly dropped about a -- get this -- half-mile . One person died and dozens were injured and hospitalized in Bangkok -- the city where the plane diverted.  There are media reports attempting to tie the incident to "clear air turbulence" (the air wasn't clear! -- see above) so the scientists can then attempt to tie the incident to --  you guessed it -- global warming ("is there anything it can't do?!"). I'd like to provide information that makes much more meteorological sense. You will find an explanation at Dr. Cliff Mass' blog, here . Meteorologist Simon Proud has presented an animation of the 777's flight path and you can see where it passes through the thunderstorms. It is availa...

"Did Exxon Make It Rain Today?" -- Recommended Reading #1

Image
It is accurate that humanity's emissions have helped boost world temperatures over the past half-century. Droughts may have worsened in some areas. But -- in spite of what the mainstream media has told us -- there is little evidence that storms have gotten worse.  Ted Nordhaus has penned a four-part series (with an outstanding title) that explains how Big Climate has manipulated the facts to make politicians and people believe what isn't true -- that storms have gotten worse and will only get worse in the future.  Two  under-engineered and long-neglected dams  in the divided country of Libya, racked for years by civil war, fail, sending a torrent of flood water into a large city and killing thousands. While Lahaina, Hawaii, is ablaze, Maui authorities  fail to send out an evacuation warning  and  close the main road  out of the city, as  fire hydrants run dry  amid  years-long fights  over water supply, resulting in a hundred ...

Would It Hurt Them to Headline an Actual Compliment?

Image
I simply don't understand today's news media. Not at all.  We gave Southern California eleven days notice  of an extraordinary storm. Eleven days! We talked about as much as 15 inches in the mountains and flooding rains at lower elevations. Check! High winds and power outages. Check! More than 1.5 million people were without power.  Heavy snow in the mountains that would shut down highways. Check again.  This forecast map was published February 1, the rains began the night of the 3rd.  More than ten inches were forecast for the mountains, more than six at lower elevations. As we got closer to the event, forecasts of 17 inches were posted. The maximum amount? 19.97 inches just about exactly where we forecast the seventeen.  Here is a map of the actual amounts over three days.  Please note, it is still raining -- hard -- in parts of central California which will increase ultimate precipitation amounts in the Sierra. While the above map makes it appear th...

Pledge of Allegiance... to Stymie Global Warming Speech?

Image
There are noble pledges like the Pledge of Allegiance and pledges that can be evil (like fictional one above from the movie  Blazing Saddles) . But, it is nearly impossible to tell which is which if we can't know the content of the pledge.  In Baltimore tomorrow, Tuesday, at 11:40am, the American Meteorological Society (AMS) is evidently going to enter into and sign a "pledge" with major news organizations and various "scientific" organizations from around the world. From the AMS's announcement, here is a list of science organizations: I don't know anything about the "More..."     Also, other than one of the sponsors, EarthX TV, it does not list which media organizations are signing the pledge. Brad Colman, the President of the AMS, says,   "Tackling the challenges of climate change requires participation across all of society, yet in today's information environment,  it can be difficult to distinguish what claims are evidence-based ,...
