Major Fire at Global Warming Conference

Image
"COP 30" currently in progress in Brazil is the annual luxurious, private jet-dominated orgy of spending in a remote part of the world where the attendees tell us we must cut our carbon footprints. Ironically, there was considerable 'warming' today when a large fire broke out. In a bit of probably unintentional irony The Metro   reported on a "hotly disputed" topic: I'm sure those discussions were heated before Guterres said "compromise was acceptable" (see link). Fortunately, there were no fatalities from the fire.

If You Are In a Fire....

Image
NY Post With the horrific news of the fire in New York City that has killed 19 -- including 9 children -- I thought a few recommendations might be helpful should you ever find yourself in this awful situation.  I have been in a fire in a high rise. I was living on the eighth floor and the fire was on the 4th. It occurred at 4:30 in the morning.  Keep your clothes next to your bed at night. You never know (fire, tornado, earthquake) when you may need to quickly don them.  Keep fire extinguishers next to your bed and in the kitchen. If in doubt, use them!   Smoke is so think you cannot see your hand in front of your face.  Usually, you can't safely escape by walking. Even if you could, the smoke and heat may seriously damage your lungs. Crawl.  Teach your children the above. Plus, please teach them to meet you at a certain spot outdoors. Rehearse this! Then,  once you are safe outdoors, call 9-1-1. Don't waste time inside calling the fire department, unl...

“It’s Very Remote Something Like That Would Happen Here.”

So said Rhode Island's Fire Marshall February 20, 2003, commenting on a nightclub stampede that killed 21 three days before in Chicago -- eight hours before The Station Fire that killed 100 in Warwick, RI. Tomorrow is the tenth anniversary of that horrible disaster. Wikipedia AS the band Great White came on stage at 11:07pm, fireworks are set off inside The Station nightclub has more than 400 crowded inside the building. At 11:08, the fire alarm sounds. One minute later, as flames shimmy up the walls next to the stage, the lights go out. Then, just two minutes after, the club is fully engulfed in fire. I happened to be on business in the area when this catastrophe occurred and remember it well. As a primary goal of this blog is saving lives and mitigating risks, I wish to remind our readers of the lessons learned in this horrible event. The Providence Journal  has an well-researched and detailed  time line . As you review it, note the number of times the government ...

NOTE: For some reason the Dallas Morning News  pulled the link to (co-owned) WFAA TV's video, so I have removed it. Here is a Dallas Morning News photo of the conflagration. AccuWeather has had great coverage today. Jesse Ferrell points out a fire-nado in the WFAA TV video and I have highlighted it with an arrow. The smoke is so great, it can be seen via satellite.
