In Part III of my series on reforming NOAA and creating a National Disaster Review Board, I mentioned Wichita State University's Innovation Campus. It is an amazing place.  Wichita State is an undiscovered (by many) gem of a university. It has an incredible new  "innovation campus " which extends east from the main campus.  WSU is home to the National Institute for Aviation Research and numerous other scientific and engineering endeavors. Wait until you read about what WSU is going to do for the military .  The WSU Innovation Campus is where I propose to place the National Disaster Review Board. You will find a link to an interview with Andrew Revkin where I explain how the NDRB will work and why it is so desperately needed along with my rationale for proposing WSU. 

Remind me not to depend on his student-designed bridges, the tornado warnings his graduates issue or the surgery they perform.  Actually, the racists are the people who believe blacks and other minorities are too stupid to flourish in our society. 

Only a college professor could tweet something this evil. Dr. Bair is a professor of statistics at Riverside Community College in California, but he evidently cannot count to 49 million.  We simply cannot give the left more power. It is too dangerous to do so.

According to a scientifically significant survey, Kansas State University is #2 in terms of freest speech on campus. Well done KSU!!! If you are interested, the #1 campus was the University of Chicago. The least free campus is DePauw University (second worst was the University of Texas in Austin).   Some other aspects of Kansas State. Note the #3 quality of life in the nation. Manhattan ("The Little Apple") is a great  town. Two of my three children went to KSU and we were extremely pleased with both their education and the experience they had on campus. Plus, they have a great football team.

There have seen a number of presentations pertaining to school safety here at the AMS meeting. Yesterday afternoon, forensic meteorological engineer Tim Marshall presented a paper on his investigation of buildings destroyed in the Joplin tornado. The schools did not fare well. Recently, I posted the tornado safety rules for schools and these presentations drove home how important they are, especially never to shelter in a room with an outside wall (see above) or in structure with a wide free-span roof (i.e., a gym). That said, some of the hallways (where the students should shelter) didn't fare very well either. I've previously stated that it is time to take a second look at public shelters. Perhaps this capability should be built into schools.

One of the most frequent questions I am asked is, “Where should my high school student go to college?   He/she is interested in weather.” That question is often followed by “ Which is the best school?” Unfortunately, there is no one “correct” answer.   It depends on the student’s interest and career goals. First, some background.   Meteorology seems to be a field where it is either feast or famine with regard to job openings.   Throughout the ‘90’s there were more jobs than graduating students.   Now, it is the opposite.   There are jobs, but they are much less plentiful than they were ten years ago.   I suspect that, in about five years, demand will pick up as the hiring bulge the National Weather Service experienced in the 1970’s (when I was graduating from college) becomes retirees.   So, if your student is still in high school, there should be a reasonable number of jobs.
