"The Day Television Weather Grew Up"

Image
At this time in 1974, a major tornado outbreak was beginning in central Oklahoma that shifted to northeast Oklahoma in the evening. This tornado outbreak is notable as it was " The Day Television Weather Grew Up ." Addition: Here is a brief comment about Warnings  from Oklahoma's Gary England who was on Channel 9 while I was broadcasting on Channel 4. We were both hard at it with multiple tornadoes simultaneously on the ground at this moment (3:43PM) 44 years ago.

Big Climate Spends $150,000,000 To Influence Your Thinking About Global Warming

We've talked about Big Climate's propaganda effort before but this is the first time I have seen the $150 million figure. Details are here . One of the interesting aspects of this effort is to convince you that an unknown "big oil" bugaboo is out there spending money on propaganda. It doesn't exist. Big Climate does and the article breaks down its elements.

Left Moving / Right Moving Thunderstorms

Image
This time of year, you will sometimes hear meteorologists talk about left moving and right moving thunderstorms. Here is an example and I will then explain why it is important. Original Thunderstorm Here you see a thunderstorm just beginning to split. The storm on the left is moving toward the NNW and the second is beginning to move to the east. Typically, the left mover will cause large hail and the right mover will produce a tornado. Second Image of Splitting Thunderstorm Sure enough a tornado warning is issued on the right-moving (east-moving) thunderstorm while a warning for large hail is issued on the left-moving storm. Like everything in meteorology, this does not work 100% of the time, but it is something to keep in mind during the rest of storm season.

Speaking of Cool Photos of the Laramie Tornado...

Image
This is a screen capture from @Dev 's Twitter video. Since tornadoes are (incorrectly) believed to be a uniquely American storm, I thought the tornado and flag were a nice combination. As I have previously discussed, meteorologists hate tornado damage and injuries as much or more than everyone else. However, we are in a unique situation: if we forecast a tornado and none occurs, then it is the (emphatically incorrect) "you guys never get it right!" So, once we have forecast a tornado to occur, we are cheering for a tornado like this one to occur. Highly visible, so the public knows the warning or forecast was correct, but harming absolutely nothing.

Destructive Hailstorm in DFW

This eerie photograph represents the leading edge of a highly destructive hailstorm to move into the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex. Via Twitter          Speaking of photos, here is another great one from Twitter: My favorite type of tornado: highly visible and hurts absolutely nothing!

Great Father's Day Gift

Want a great gift for Dad? How about Warnings  which received yet another favorable reader review just yesterday?! While it is all true, it is written in the form of a novel and is sure to keep Dad's attention. A book is treasured forever.
