Pink = winter storm warning. Orange = blizzard warning. All of the green areas are various flood warnings due, in part, to the heavy snow cover which will grow a little deeper today.

The Economics of Wind Power

My posting below, Broken Wind Turbines , seems to have touched a nerve. Several commenters dispute my contention that wind turbines are unreliable and uneconomic. I have tried to get, from Texas, detailed information about wind power output. The wind power industry seems to have gotten it declared "secret." Hardly a promising sign that it is delivering what its promoters contend. Others have found the same thing. This posting is from The Energy Collective , Vendors, owners, financiers often claim “trade secrets”, whereas in reality they want to obfuscate wind power’s shortcomings, a too-generous subsidy deal, or other insider’s advantage. It would be much better for all involved, if there were public hearings and full disclosure regarding the economics of any project receiving government subsidies, to ensure the people’s funds receive the best return on investment. The Collective did manage to obtain the financials on a university wind power project and several others. ...

As Glenn Reynolds commented, "Somewhere Wile E Coyote is smiling!" Courtesy Warners Bros. American ingenuity at work: A jet pack for snow skiing!  If Dave Barry were here, he would probably be commenting how a " guy " must have invented this. He can get up to 47 mph! The video is here.

Paging Meteorologists...Paging Meteorologists

Image
Sigh. On December 6, 2009, I wrote on this blog: There is no evidence that “global warming” is causing the glacier at Mt. Kilimanjaro to retreat.    I have written on this same subject at least two additional times since then with same message. Local climatological records don't show warmer than normal temperatures in the region in recent decades!  So, global warming could not possibly have caused the glacier's retreat. "...may not lose its beautiful ice cap as scientists had predicted." Full story here . As has been the case too many times in the 'global warming' debate, the "scientists" were not meteorologists. As I have explained on several occasions, meteorologists tend to be the most skeptical of 'global warming.' In the case of the Mt. Kilimanjaro, it took me maybe 30 minutes to look up the temperature records for the last few decades that show "warming" couldn't possibly have caused the period of melting snow. ...

Lots of Strong Thunderstorms This Week

Spring thunderstorm season gets into full swing this week as a strong low pressure system (the same one that caused flooding in Hollywood yesterday) moves across the Nation. Today.. Large hail is the main threat in both of the "slight risk" areas. Tuesday.. Tornadoes, large hail, and damaging thunderstorm winds are possible. Wednesday.. Damaging winds are the main threat. Even more thunderstorms are likely later in the week.
