Proposal to Shut Down the National Center for Atmospheric Research

Image
NCAR's headquarters on Table Mesa near Boulder, Colorado. Courtesy of Dr. Roger Pielke, Jr.  The Trump Administration has proposed to shut down National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) located in the Rocky Mountain foothills (specifically, Table Mesa) near Boulder, Colorado. The usual suspects are furious or think it is "past time." The issue, as I see it, is that NCAR was originally set up to be the nation's premier institution of applied  meteorological research:   thunderstorm safety, and that type of thing. Unfortunately, just a few years after its creation, it was "captured" by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) -- which changed its focus that atmospheric scientists call "basic" research. An example was (and this is real) how much carbon dioxide is released every time a bee farts?  While there is nothing wrong with basic research, we have an imbalance in the U.S. where too much tax money goes to basic research a...

More on FEMA Not Assisting Disaster Victims With "Trump" Signs

Image
As we all knew, FEMA's skipping over homes with external indications the residents were conservative it was never limited to a single individual or supervisor, in spite of FEMA's protests to the contrary. To refresh your memory: Turns out it has been doing on since 2021 (Biden Administration) and Hurricane Ida.  Not only were they refusing relief, they were collecting political intelligence on the residents! You will find an investigative report here . The sooner FEMA is put out of our misery (i.e., completely reformed), the better. The states and localities should be responsible for disaster relief with (what's left) of a slimmed-down FEMA providing logistics and resources. [New, Tuesday] DHS's report on FEMA's actions is here .  I also -- strongly -- suspect that a National Disaster Review Board would have uncovered this long before last autumn.

For my dear friends in Wichita. The city manager form of government has held us back too long.

NOAA's Reaction to the New Administration?

Image
So far, the reaction to my suggestions for the future of the National Weather Service and NOAA ( here ) have been well-received.  This week, I have become aware of others who have similar thoughts about the future of the National Weather Service (NWS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Whether those will become public is unknown at this point. But, I do know for certain there are some on Capitol Hill that are unhappy with NOAA as it stands today as well as numerous people in the atmospheric science field.  So, when this popped up on Twitter a little while ago, I thought the timing was curious.  You can find the Podcast and a transcript here . Almost all of it is about weather   which surprised me. Is NOAA feeling pressure about its stewardship of the NWS? Dr. Spinrad, NOAA's administrator, is an oceanographer who has not spent a lot of time talking about the NWS in the past.  It wouldn't surprise me to suddenly find a lot of love exp...

Terrific Article About the Latest Luxurious Climate Fun-Fest -- Updated Friday

Image
I highly recommend this article : The latest global climate conference opened Monday in Azerbaijan. The timing is excellent. Any doubt regarding the wisdom of the next Trump administration’s likely pullout from such meetings should be dispelled by the conference photos alone. Here are tens of thousands of well fed, well-dressed members of the global elite—activists, employees of lavishly funded NGOs, armies of government bureaucrats, hundreds of heads of state—who have all travelled via jet and private plane to this remote corner of the Earth and who expect that every minute of their day will be supported by abundant, magically available energy. None has sacrificed a single personal comfort to save the planet.  COP29 is primarily a meeting of climate grifters as the New York Post  and Bjorn Lomborg point out . The Telegraph  calls it "an embarrassment ." The Wall Street Journal says: that it hopes the sky will not be "too clouded by the exhaust of all of the private jet...

Concerns About Climate Graft

Image
We've frequently talked about how global warming, while being a real issue, has been increasingly exploited for those seeking power and money.  On the international front, we've just learned that between $26 and $41 billion  dollars have gone missing .  The Washington Post  is hardly a conservative publication yet even it has had to cover the many billions that were appropriated for electric vehicle charging stations (top of page) that have purchased almost nothing . This is not to be confused with the $42 billion program for rural internet which has connected zero people .  Big Climate exists to skim as much money as possible from these programs and, since most reporters and asssignment editors are liberal, they don't wish to dig into this deep corruption because it would make "their side" look bad.  Regardless of politics, the United States -- once the "land of opportunity -- is increasingly being strangled by its federal deficit. We simply cannot af...

This Month's Required Reading

This is from an author and college professor. It is essential reading. America, if we wish to continue to be the "land of the free," has no other choice this  election.  M. C. Armstrong @mcarmystrong To @TheDemocrats , This is my career suicide note, but it’s also a thank you from someone who is done with careerism. I’m a lifelong member of your party and I’m voting for Donald Trump. Why? It’s not just your industrial-scale censorship or your endless wars or the fact that you disenfranchised millions of Kennedy voters through lawfare. If that were all I had, it would be sufficient, in terms of conscience and rage, but there’s more to this story than anger. Your hatred and censorship has taught me to admire @realDonaldTrump and to love my fellow working-class Americans, and for that I thank you. This vote is for all the traumatized people who have been canceled and banished just for saying no to the establishment. This vote is for the surveyor, the farmer, the HVAC man, th...

Reviewing Absurd Climate Forecasts

Image
It is almost impossible to overstate how ridiculous these climate forecasts are. This one was published more than three years ago but we -- and the planet -- are still around.  These stories are usually coordinated between Big Climate and the news media. The timing usually is when some bill is before Congress or a policy is being considered by a presidential administration or a presidential department like the Environmental Protection Administration. No one believes these except gullible climate groupies (if you wonder to whom I'm referring, just read the comments section to any Washington Post  article about climate).  Once published, [non-scientists] at the White House, in Congress, and others will write worrisome pieces on social media and for the MSM which lobbyists will use to influence congresspeople (almost none are scientists) and on and on.  The money starts flowing (if it involves alternative energy, a surprising amount of graft often seems to be involved)...

"Don't do as I do, do as I say." The amount of hypocrisy from global warming 'believers' is off the charts.

What Makes Our Tornado and Extreme Weather Coverage -- and This Blog -- Different?

Image
You might have seen these: The forecasts and warnings that I make are mine. Forecasts presented on this blog usually take 1 to 3 hours and, in the case of storm warnings on Twitter -- since they must be quick -- several minutes. Of course, you see that I also forward warnings from the National Weather Service (NWS). On occasion, I disagree with their warnings. Those I do not  forward. I may write about them later, but I don't want to make a big deal about it at the time and add to any confusion during an important storm situation.  So, since none  of our forecasts and warnings are automations, the above change in Twitter's policy does not affect what you will see on Twitter from the  @usweatherexpert account. While I realize there is "storm fatigue" after all of the tornadoes of late April and early May, it is important to realize all of those forecasts and warnings save lives . I'm pleased to say that every one of the "thank you for saving my family's li...

Global Warming: Is There Anything It Can't Do?!

Image
There a moderate earthquake in New Jersey this morning, which brought this comment from a leftist candidate for Congress.... Chris and many others ... accurately.... told Ms. Khalil that earthquakes and weather have nothing to do with each other. Instead of having the grace to thank them for the correction, she ended up blocking them. It is a shame she is so closed-minded.

Religious Freedom in Peril

Image
While we enjoy posting our "Sunday Fun" features, this is a serious post on the day of the week when Christians traditionally worship God.   You will find information on the bill before Canada's Parliament here . Twenty years ago, no one would have dared introduce such outrageous legislation. Now, among the Canadian and US's 'intelligentsia,' this type of thinking is becoming mainstream. As we have seen with the -- sometimes violent -- protests against Israel in recent weeks, many 'progressives' in the USA are increasingly hostile to the Judeo-Christian ethic that has been the backbone of our nation for 248 years.  To give you a second example from last week, someone named Heidi Przybyla, posted the item below and repeated it -- several times -- on MSNBC. Keeping in mind  there is no such thing as "Christian Nationalism ," this is an attempt by MSNBC and Democrats to influence future events by creating a slur!  With the political purpose of t...

Global Warming: Where We Stand

Doug Sheridan gave me permission to reproduce his essay on where we stand in the whole global warming mess. Highly recommended.  Joseph Sternberg writes in the WSJ, it’s accurate to lambaste our political class for its many climate hypocrisies and idiocies. But as climate policy becomes more expensive and less coherent by the week, voters deserve more and more of the blame. However, whatever else voters say they want on climate, people really, really don’t want to redistribute the costs of mitigation toward those who emit more carbon—at least not if Johann Q. Publik thinks he might be the emitter in question. Surveys in several large European economies in August found at least two-thirds of respondents in each country were worried about climate change—and totally unwilling to pay any personal costs to mitigate it...  In—planting trees, subsidizing home insulation, taxing heavily emitting companies Out—banning internal-combustion cars, limiting meat and dairy consumption, incr...

"Perhaps, Above All, Climate Change is Making Us Stupid"

Image
The quotation in the headline is from Dan Sarewitz of Arizona State University's Consortium for Science, Policy and Outcomes. I was reminded of that quote when I saw this during last week's California storms. No other comment needed. I do wish to give giant kudos to Wichita's Koch Industries which manufactured the special glass that saved the Mona Lisa.

Remember: These Are Coordinated Hype

Image
The usual suspects pump out the climate propaganda NOAA's "Billion Dollar Disasters"are a bad joke that we have talked about on numerous other occasions. All of these headlines, at this time, are intended to "clear the battlespace" for the COP28 climate conference which will convene in Dubai on November 30. It wants to recommend draconian restrictions on our day-to-day lives (while letting China and others off the hook) and these are intended to convince you those restrictions are needed.  Ignore them! The basis for this is the U.S. Climate Assessment which is more of a political document than science. See below. They rejected peer reviewed work that was accepted by the gold standard IPCC.
