On several occasions, this blog has called for the Emergency Alert System (AES) to be discontinued (click here for one example). That is the thing with the ehhhhhhh....ehhhhhhh sound that inevitably breaks in for a test as your radio or TV program is reaching an important plot point. The "alert" system is so useless it wasn't even activated for September 11.
As if to perfectly illustrate its uselessness, several TV stations' EAS computers were hacked yesterday and a "dead bodies rising" alert was issued.
Long past time to retire the EAS.
