When Does "Tornado Season" Begin?

About this time each year, I'm asked that question and was just asked again Tuesday. I typically answer that it starts in the South sometime in February and moves north into the Dakotas in July.

A friend of mine, Patrick Marsh of the University of Oklahoma, has taken this one step farther and plotted when the first moderate-intensity and major-intensity severe weather outbreaks of the year typically occur. The answers were illuminating. If you are interested in the subject, click here.
