Here is a great column about the tremendous bargain the NWS and private sector weather companies like AccuWeather are to American society. The NWS pays for itself over and over.
Yet, even as another storm threatens the areas damaged by Sandy, the NWS's underpowered computer facilities cannot run all of the models they are needed to run.
We need a National Weather Service with a state-of-the-art infrastructure.
