Hurricane Watch: Central Gulf Coast

The salmon-colored area is a hurricane watch. The yellow is a tropical storm watch. The hurricane watch does not include New Orleans.

Current sustained winds are 60 mph. Karen is expected to increase to hurricane strength on Friday. Note, however, the forecast is for some slight weakening ("H" to "S"=tropical storm) before landfall. This assumes a low pressure trough in the upper atmosphere moves into the region fast enough to disrupt the hurricane's wind flow. Because that is somewhat uncertain, a hurricane watch is in effect in case the weakening does not occur.

More than seven inches of rain are forecast along Karen's path.
