At least 8 people have been killed by Friday's tornadoes in Indiana

This YouTube video shows the violence of one of the tornadoes that moved north of the Ohio River just north of Louisville.


At the 1:20 mark, the violent rotation sheds vortices and two small funnels poke out of right side of the main tornado.

    Mike,
    Thank you for everything you do. There is no telling how many lives you saved today (3/2/2012). The size and intensity of the outbreak is stunning, and at 10:45pm CST, it still goes on. I had been on the phone, all afternoon, to warn my relatives in KY and OH. My brother-in-law lives in Burlington, KY, near the Cincinnati airport (KCVG). They are safe, thanks. There was so much debris falling from the sky onto the runways, that KCVG was CLOSED.

    I have been watching weather since 1954, after a hurricane (Carol) hit my home state of RI.
    People I talked today did not understand what a PDS Tornado Watch is or what it means. I told them Pretty Darn Sure there will be tornadoes and they had better pay close attention.
    The EverythingWX link is great. The map of the warnings is incredible. You could write a book about this outbreak. I hope you do.

    Thanks very much for your comment. I had other things I had planned to do yesterday (finishing my mini-book on Joplin for one) but I felt obliged to blog about the early season outbreak. Glad you found it helpful!

    I posted on another entry - probably would have been better here.

    Will just briefly state I live in Jefferson County, Louisville, KY. We did get a Tornado Warning - a funnel cloud was spotted near the airport (SDF) and just after that report, I spotted a funnel cloud in the St. Matthews/Lyndon area of town. May have been the same, given the speed at which it was moving.

    Have spoken to some friends in Henryville, Indiana - still trying to touch base with others. Landlines are messed up and cell calls to the area are hit/miss. Henryville is in Clark County, adjacent to Jefferson County to the north. The damage pictures I'm seeing have left me in shock. Am glad to hear schools were dismissed early in Henryville. Public Schools in Louisville had day sched off - but private schools, UofL, JCC, and large businesses dismissed employees early here.

    Have heard of other tornadoes that hit just south of Louisville - damage reports not as bad as Henryville.

    Heard the TOR-CON index was raised from 7 to 10 by Dr. Greg Forbes yesterday. Aside from funnel cloud I spotted, we only got high winds and hail here.

    Before storms hit Louisville, when 1st Henryville Tornado was on ground, we took several power hits here. Same again when 2nd storm went through Clark County. No WX in Jefferson Co at the time, but the power hits were pretty significant. When we got our storm, no power hits - just hail and high winds. Am wondering if a power plant went off-line or if high tension electrical wires were taken out.

    My thoughts and prayers are with those in Henryville and everyone involved in the tornadoes yesterday (and sadly today). Can't believe it is still winter - only a trace of snow here this winter and no significant freezes - very unusual. Will have to see what spring brings .. again, thoughts and prayers go out to all effected.

The forecast path of the center of Hilary has shifted a bit to the west. Dangerous Travel Conditions - People Reportedly Stranded

Power outages have occurred already in southeast California. Here is the latest radar as of 7:55am PDT. As of 6:40am PDT , the radar indicates moderate to heavy rain falling over desert areas of Southern California and far western Arizona (click to enlarge).  Rainfall amounts for the 24 hours ending at 7am PDT show more than two inches have already fallen. There are reports from reliable sources that roads are already washed out and that people are stranded in isolated parts of the desert.  Below is a high-resolution computer model's rainfall forecast from 5am PDT to 11pm PDT Sunday. Update on Tornado and Wind Potential; 12 Noon PDT

There was at least one tornado and at least one funnel cloud yesterday.  --- original forecast --- Hilary (the swirly symbol) continues to move NNW paralleling the coast of Baja California, Mexico. The area outlined in red has a significant risk of tornadoe s the rest of the afternoon.  Below is a list of peak wind gusts so far.  Peak winds may increase farther north as the afternoon progresses.  Addition at 12 noon PDT: Sure enough, winds have increased.  Note: If you are in the San Diego area, I recommend not  traveling east on I-8. Heavy rains may cause flash flooding that will involve the highway.
