Video of the Wichita-Andover Tornado I Have Never Seen Before

I have never seen this video before. I do not know the photographer. You can hear the coverage of KFDI Radio at first, then the excellent coverage of meteorologist Merril Teller of KWCH TV. Of course, this was 22 years ago this evening.

I was just getting home about this time after simultaneously tracking four tornadoes. Was absolutely exhausted after being continuously on the air then doing news coverage of the disaster for media as far away as Australia.

  1. Having moved out of the area, I miss the wall to wall coverage of KFDI. I remember after the Hesston tornado in 1990 they went live on almost every storm that moved through. Was great to listen to while driving a tractor in Sumner county.

Had you already left KSN by this point?

  2. Oh, no. I saw on the air almost continuously from about 5:30 pm to about 9pm. Scroll down for a photo.

  3. Mike, what about the 2 guys that were caught under an overpass from KSN? I've heard that was the wrong thing to do and that video has caused lots of people to take risks going under bridges during tornadoes. What is your take on that?

  4. It was the wrong thing to do 99% of the time. In this case, however, they were safe.

I'll try to do a blog post in the next couple of days on this topic.
