Bombardier Safety Standdown USA

Mike was the featured guest expert speaker this morning at the 16th annual Bombardier Safety Standdown USA held at the Hyatt Hotel in Wichita, Kansas. Mike shared his custom presentation CSI: Meteorology in front of a crowd of 500 members of the aviation industry from all over the United States, offering them actionable information they can put to use today to make the skies a safer place to be.

Mike's presentation was from a chapter in his book WARNINGS: The True Story of How Science Tamed the Weather that explains the mystery behind the microburst that brought down Delta 191 on August 2, 1985 and how Mike's friend and mentor, Dr. Ted Fujita, along with photographic evidence from Mike, makes everyone who flies today much safer. Mike was involved with writing the Wind Shear Training Guide following the accident to help inform pilots of the dangers of flying into a microburst.

Mike and I shared the table with Captain Eugene A. Cernan, Commander of Apollo 17 who was also a guest speaker during the 3 day event that wraps up today. Among his numerous honors, including flying to the moon not once, but twice, Captain Cernan also holds the distinction of being the second American to walk in space and the last man to have left his footprints on the lunar surface. After Mike's speech, Captain Cernan paid Mike the supreme complement saying "Your presentation was excellent!"
