How Fast Can a Tornado Travel?

Innumerable times throughout my career I have been asked, "What is the fastest forward speed a tornado can travel?" I've always answered, "around 70 mph."

That answer is now out of date. The correct answer is about 95 mph!! And, a satellite tornado (i.e., a tornado within a tornado) has been measured to travel at 175 mph. No, these aren't wind speeds, they are the speed of movement of tornadoes across the ground.

Storm chaser Pecos Hank has a fascinating look at this subject.
