Update on Major Winter Storm in the Southeast

A serious winter storm is going to affect the Southeast and, perhaps, the Middle Atlantic and Northeast states later in the week.

Here is the probability of a tenth of an inch of freezing rain -- glaze ice -- with this storm. This will cause serious traffic problems. These are high numbers.

These are the probabilities of a quarter inch (0.25") of freezing rain accumulating. At this value, power failures begin to occur: These are high, to very high, numbers. It is likely parts of northern and northeast Georgia into South Carolina will have a half-inch or so of ice. If that is correct, there will be power failures that will last for days.

Here are the probabilities of 2" or more of snow with this storm. The map is oriented from Huntsville to NYC. The deep red is 95%! In the South 2" of snow is enough to cause serious traffic problems.

And, here is the probability of six inches or more which may be on the low side toward Washington-Baltimore and Philadelphia. There will also be moderate to high winds that will cause drifting snow.

It is important that you prepare. Tips for heavy snow and ice are here.

Whatever you do, you don't want to fly into this mess. Here are tips for before your flight is cancelled.
