Why the Emphasis on the 2013 Wheat?

I was asked why I'm putting so much emphasis on planing the 2013 winter wheat crop and it is a fair question. Given the 2012 crop was reduced due to the drought and the serious cut in soybean and corn yields by the same drought, the world is flirting with a grain shortage.

You can't harvest a crop you don't plant. Thus the emphasis on the weather and soil moisture conditions for planing the 2013 crop. Winter wheat is planted in fall, often September in Kansas, so this recent moisture is a godsend.
