1:40pm UPDATE: Dangerous Winds Forecast for the Central Great Plains

It is a day to pay attention to the weather if you live in the central Great Plains.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Kansas till 7p
The Storm Prediction Center has hit this one hard: they are now forecasting tornadoes, widespread winds of 85 mph and hail to 2.5" in diameter until 7pm. It is vital to prepare now, suggestions below.

Damaging Winds
The area in red has an enhanced risk of wind gusts of 60 mph or stronger. The hatched area is where wind gusts of 75 mph or stronger are forecasted to occur. It is entirely possible that localized wind gusts could reach 90 mph with accompanying power outages and damage to trees. Update: SPC has extended the area of 75+ winds to include Tulsa, Stillwater, Enid and north suburbs of Oklahoma City. It has also extended it west in Kansas.

Taking an updated wider view,
The significant threat (yellow) of damaging winds extends from Chicago and Milwaukee to Oklahoma City and the northern Texas Panhandle. 

Large Hail
The red area has an enhanced risk of hail 1 inch in diameter or larger. The yellow area has a significant risk. 

Current Weather as of 11:40am
Wind gusts of 64 mph were measured about a half-hour ago with that large storm southeast of McCook. New storms are developing between McCook and Russell. Especially if you live in the hatched or red areas above, I recommend monitoring trusted local sources of weather information the rest of the day.

Preparation Advice
  • Put your car in the garage or under a carport if you have either. 
  • Bring in lawn furniture or other items which may blow about. 
  • Keep the kids close by or in contact.
  • If you have infirm friends or relatives, please make plans now.

First Tornado Watch of the Day Issued

Unfortunately, the forecast is working out. A tornado watch is already in effect in Oklahoma and Texas.  This watch is in effect until 1pm.  Thunderstorms are developing in the southeast Texas Panhandle. They will move northeast and strengthen. Please keep a close eye on the weather in these areas.  I'll have comprehensive forecast up in 60-90 minutes.

Hilary's Forecast Path Shifts West; Updated 9:20am PDT

The forecast path of the center of Hilary has shifted a bit to the west. This increases the threat to the Southland, especially in terms of flooding.  Rainfall Note the heavy rains are forecast for Los Angeles County. Serious flash flooding may result. Because the forecast path has shifted to the west, that increases the threat of serious flooding in Los Angeles County north into Yosemite and the southern Sierra. It lessens the threat in Utah and western Arizona. While the threat of widespread flooding in Utah and Arizona lessens, note that some thunderstorms with localized heavy rain show up on the map.  In Nevada, the more western path increases the risk of serious flooding around Mt Charleston and into the central part of the state.  Here is the updated  (9am PDT) flash flood risk map.
