If genuine, this change of heart and mind is most welcome. Yes, climate change is a clear issue that requires intelligent responses (wind and solar ≠ intelligent responses) like nuclear energy, especially the next generation of nuclear reactors. Hopefully, it also means that he will abandon his generous climate "geoengineering" projects. 

Melissa is a Cat 3 with 105 mph winds. A hurricane warning is in effect for Bermuda. Hurricane conditions are expected on the island tonight.  Here is the path of hurricane force winds (brown) to the present time.

The latest forecast, which hasn't changed much, is below. The storm restrengthened over water this evening and will slam into southeast Cuba Wednesday morning.  The map below, in brown, shows the area that has experienced hurricane force (>75 mph winds). ---- Within the past half-hour, the center of Melissa exited the coast of Jamaica just east of Montego Bay. The winds have "weakened" to a still severe 145 mph and the pressure has risen to 906 mb. The storm should be roughly this intensity or a little weaker when it arrives in Cuba.  From Cuba, Melissa is forecast to sweep through the Turks & Cacaos Islands as well as the eastern Bahamas. There is also a hurricane watch for Bermuda.  1:05pm. Landfall officially occurred at 1:03pm EDT. Based on Hurricane Hunter data, wind gusts to 200 mph possible in higher elevations of Jamaica near the coast.  12:45am. Winds are 185 mph (!) and the central pressure is 892mb (!). 11:10pm. Updated NHC forecast and warnings.  Red = hurricane warnings.  8:10pm. I think the Hurricane Center is being conservative with Melissa's eye winds. They are clearly at least 180 mph. The storm has been drifting very slowly to the southwest  the past couple of hours   which was not forecast. The farther west the eye moves, the better it would be for Jamaica so please offer some prayers this trend continues. I'd love for the purple line below to be the most correct or even to the west.  1:48pm. Melissa's winds are now 175 mph  -- one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes in history.  1:30pm. [1:15a Monday]   This is the most powerful hurricane in its presentation on satellite that you will probably ever see in the Atlantic. The (hard to discern) lightning around the eye indicates additional strengthening. I have placed an arrow pointing to the northeast coast of Jamaica. I suspect winds are now in the 160mph range or even a little stronger but we won't know because the midnight Hurricane Hunter aircraft has apparently had to turn back (reason unknown).  [6:20p] As anticipated, the strengthening of Melissa resumed this afternoon and it now appears it will reach Cat 5 intensity. [4:20p] Based on satellite and aircraft Hurricane Hunter data, Melissa has sustained winds of 150 mph around the eye and the pressure has dropped at least another 4 mb during the past four hours. [11pm] Melissa is now a major hurricane with 115 mph sustained winds. An eye developed rapidly this evening. Pressure is down to 967 mb and it is moving very slowly west. The storm is forecast to reach Cat. 5 intensity in 48 hours, before it strikes Jamaica.  Nation-By-Nation Guidance:

On Wednesday, August 27, a transgender person shot through the window of Annunciation Church in Minneapolis during Mass killing two and wounding many others.  Among the most gravely wounded was 12-yr old Sophia Forchas who, according to news reports, was “virtually brain dead” when she arrived at the hospital. As we all knew, FEMA's skipping over homes with external indications the residents were conservative it was never limited to a single individual or supervisor, in spite of FEMA's protests to the contrary. To refresh your memory: Turns out it has been doing on since 2021 (Biden Administration) and Hurricane Ida.  Not only were they refusing relief, they were collecting political intelligence on the residents! You will find an investigative report here . The sooner FEMA is put out of our misery (i.e., completely reformed), the better. The states and localities should be responsible for disaster relief with (what's left) of a slimmed-down FEMA providing logistics and resources. The rededication this Saturday morning -- under sunny skies with a perfect temperature -- was wonderful. People were reading the names of their loved ones and sharing memories of that F-5 tornado 68 years ago.  The rededication began with Amazing Grace, Taps,  and the flag presentation.  Several elected representatives spoke about the history of the event and the importance of of staying vigilant against future weather threats. I spoke as did Carolyn Brewer, author of Caught in the Path.  Carolyn Brewer speaking as I look on.  For the children there was a petting zoo, pony rides, and for families free hot dogs, pop corn, soft drinks, et cetera. It was great occasion! Since the memorial was destroyed by an errant driver in September, 2024, there were times we weren't sure this day would come. It was worth waiting for. Future generations will have an appropriate place to learn about and remember that critical day in Kansas City's history.  -------------------...

Wichita was awarded this huge honor over Atlanta, Charlotte and other cities. Congratulations! Coming up? Wichita will host the U.S. National Youth Soccer President's Cup in 2026, 2027 and 2028. This is the first time ever  a city has been awarded the tournament three years in a row.

While some are posting it in 'jest,' this is not a laughing matter. People are posting one of the American GFS's model's "fantasycanes" -- a hurricane that is only a figment of the model's imagination and is not  a legitimate forecast. Do not believe or even be concerned about this! No other model shows a hurricane, let alone one in this location. I simply don't understand why the U.S.'s National Weather Service doesn't fix this: it has been a problem for more than a decade. I promise: if there is a serious threat of a hurricane, you'll will get full details here. 

Saturday at 10am, the reconstructed Ruskin Heights Tornado Memorial will be re-dedicated.  The original memorial, pictured above, was destroyed when a car full of teenaged boys missed the corner at a high rate of speed and destroyed it.  We've spent the past year redesigning, overseeing and fund raising for the new memorial. Brad Smith (no relation) of KC Stone generously donated materiel and labor for memorial.  Saturday at 10am, there will be a rededication ceremony. Details are here . It will be at the intersection of Red Bridge and Blue Ridge Roads in south Kansas City (just south of Ruskin High School). After, there will be outdoor activities for children and other fun.  I will be speaking to explain how weather science saved lives that horrible evening. There will be new plaque added explaining how that evening was the first-ever government tornado warning. Of course, those warnings have saved thousands and thousands of lives during the past 60+ years.

I saw her the first time in Annie Hall  and she just lit up the screen. Her performances in the Godfather  movies often did not get the credit they deserved. She has passed away at the age of 79. May she rest in peace.
