Snow and Blizzard Update, 4:30pm Monday

National Weather Service storm warnings.

The blizzard warning has been extended south and west into Texas and New Mexico.

The color codes:
  • Orange = blizzard warning.
  • Pink = winter storm warning for heavy snow.
  • Gold and sand = high wind warnings.
  • Dark green = winter storm watch.
  • Purple = winter weather advisory.
  • The pale brown is a "wind advisory," which is for winds around 25 mph. I suggest disregarding it. 
Here is the forecast for additional snow on top of what has fallen to 1pm CST. 
The two areas marked low confidence are because of some dry air aloft that is "misbehaving" (meteorological term 😀). The computer models from this morning for Jabara Airport in Wichita forecast anywhere for 1 to 13 inches of snow, so they aren't having any better luck resolving it than I. I believe Wichita will receive 2-4" that will be blown into drifts. A similar problem exists in southwest Missouri. 

Here is the radar as of 4:22pm. Numerous roads are closed in western Kansas, including I-70 between Hays, KS and Limon, Colorado. I-80 is closed in central Nebraska between Lexington and Grand Island.

First Tornado Watch of the Day Issued

Unfortunately, the forecast is working out. A tornado watch is already in effect in Oklahoma and Texas.  This watch is in effect until 1pm.  Thunderstorms are developing in the southeast Texas Panhandle. They will move northeast and strengthen. Please keep a close eye on the weather in these areas.  I'll have comprehensive forecast up in 60-90 minutes.

Hilary's Forecast Path Shifts West; Updated 9:20am PDT

The forecast path of the center of Hilary has shifted a bit to the west. This increases the threat to the Southland, especially in terms of flooding.  Rainfall Note the heavy rains are forecast for Los Angeles County. Serious flash flooding may result. Because the forecast path has shifted to the west, that increases the threat of serious flooding in Los Angeles County north into Yosemite and the southern Sierra. It lessens the threat in Utah and western Arizona. While the threat of widespread flooding in Utah and Arizona lessens, note that some thunderstorms with localized heavy rain show up on the map.  In Nevada, the more western path increases the risk of serious flooding around Mt Charleston and into the central part of the state.  Here is the updated  (9am PDT) flash flood risk map.
