Warnings: The True Story of How Science Tamed the Weather is the story of how weather scientists created the storm warning system that saves thousands of lives each year. Think about the 1888 "Children's Blizzard," which killed at least 235. Last week's blizzard was, meteorologically, quite similar to the 1888 storm but, thanks to warnings days in advance, the death toll was in the single digits.

Warnings is written in the style of a novel but it is all true.

When the Sirens Were Silent is the story of the Joplin Tornado, which killed 161 people -- by far the worst single tornado since civilian tornado warnings began in 157. The warning program didn't function properly that day and that failure demonstrates the vital nature of storm warnings. When they work properly, lives are saved.
