A Climate Claim Contrary to Basic Meteorology

Image
There was an interesting item on LinkedIn last week. Climate science's latest "tool" is a reanalysis of world weather during the 20th Century. They take this reanalysis 'data,' put it in a climate model and, presto-chango,  we have a stronger storm than the one that actually occurred. What a surprise! 🙄 But there are good reasons to believe the output of the computer model is wrong.  The "climate" scientist promoting this finding, Dr. Ed Hawkins, is not educated in weather or climate. Per his Wikipedia entry: In no way do I mean to make this personal: A person who can obtain a PhD in Astrophysics is smart . But, that may not be the specific education needed to be a discerning climate scientist when I model provides questionable results. What do I mean? In a meteorology degree program, the first semester of your junior year, you learn about the atmospheric conditions that cause storms. One of the essential elements for a strong storm is a strong tempera...

The Scientific Malpractice: NOAA's "Billion Dollar Disasters"

Image
From Dr. Roger Pielke, Jr. ..... This is a topic covered on this blog since 2019: A story linked to by Dr. Pielke quotes attorney and activist Monica Medina explaining that she was one of the originators of this terrible idea.  Here is the issue: A "disaster" is a single event. The Maui Fire was a billion-dollar disaster. The Camp Fire (CA) was a billion-dollar disaster. The Joplin Tornado was a billion-dollar disaster. Gathering disparate events over four days does not  a billion dollar disaster make. The purpose of these is to convince people that disasters are becoming more numerous and worse -- even though there is no genuine evidence that is true.  Unfortunately, NOAA used to be above this sort of thing. It is unfortunate everything in Washington has become so politicized.

'There are Still Some Deniers Out There in Terms of Whether or Not Climate Change Had Anything to Do With Any of This.'

Thus spoke President Joe Biden referring to Hurricane Idalia on Thursday afternoon. I realize that tying global warming to things is red meat for his party's base.  Only one problem: the facts don't support his position. It is impossible for climate change to "cause" hurricanes.  Can climate change "contribute" to hurricanes? Theoretically, yes, but the evidence is weak.  Hurricane Strength and Duration The peer-reviewed " ACE Index " ( A ccumulated C yclone E nergy) is the gold standard as to hurricane frequency and intensity (wind speeds). It is available back to 1970, when we first had worldwide weather satellite coverage. There is no upward trend whatsoever -- it is flat. There is no increase due to climate change!  Hurricanes are not getting stronger. What about disaster costs? Of course, those are rising but it is because so many are building expensive homes and businesses in high risk areas. Let's look at what causes losses. Landfalls Le...

"Climate News Is Broken"...

Image
....is the title of a piece by Dr. Roger Pielke, Junior. It is concise, illuminating and you can read it here . He cites a paper demonstrating the one-sidedness of climate coverage. That is something we've known about for years but his piece is still worth reading.  I'll add a second part to the issues with climate reporting and that is the gullibility of climate reporters.  Twitter Everywhere is warming faster than everywhere else! Of course, very few climate reporters have any background in genuine science. When you combine it with what they want  to believe, these idiotic stories get published.
