Update on Winter Wheat Crop Status

Things are looking up in Kansas but are still grim farther south. 

Here are precipitation amounts from the past 30 days. 

And, here is the difference from average moisture during March.
Because of the cool weather in March, it is likely the crop in Kansas is running behind schedule. So, the rain might have significantly helped the crop. 

The Palmer Drought Index up to March 26 (which does not include the substantial rains in Kansas earlier this week) depicts the more serious drought conditions in Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico.

The forecast rain amounts for the next five days are fairly generous in Oklahoma but it may be too late to help the crop much as the wheat is farther along in its development.

First Tornado Watch of the Day Issued

Unfortunately, the forecast is working out. A tornado watch is already in effect in Oklahoma and Texas.  This watch is in effect until 1pm.  Thunderstorms are developing in the southeast Texas Panhandle. They will move northeast and strengthen. Please keep a close eye on the weather in these areas.  I'll have comprehensive forecast up in 60-90 minutes.

Hilary's Forecast Path Shifts West; Updated 9:20am PDT

The forecast path of the center of Hilary has shifted a bit to the west. This increases the threat to the Southland, especially in terms of flooding.  Rainfall Note the heavy rains are forecast for Los Angeles County. Serious flash flooding may result. Because the forecast path has shifted to the west, that increases the threat of serious flooding in Los Angeles County north into Yosemite and the southern Sierra. It lessens the threat in Utah and western Arizona. While the threat of widespread flooding in Utah and Arizona lessens, note that some thunderstorms with localized heavy rain show up on the map.  In Nevada, the more western path increases the risk of serious flooding around Mt Charleston and into the central part of the state.  Here is the updated  (9am PDT) flash flood risk map.
