Pilots and Emergency Managers...

Yesterday, I posted about downbursts and the necessity of aborting a landing ("go around") when one presents itself along a low-level flight path.
From the late 1960's to the 1980's, downbursts were the #1 cause of airliner crashes -- about one every 18 months! The story of downbursts were conquered and aviation made much safer is told in Warnings: The True Story of How Science Tamed the Weather

It wasn't just downbursts that have been tamed; it includes hurricanes and tornadoes. From a Kansas emergency manager in a note addressed to me:

I received your Warnings book on my birthday last Friday. My chores went unfinished, but the book wasn't. Amazing work. I think it should be a prerequisite for all emergency managers. Today, I'm ordering 'When the Sirens Were Silent.' Thank you for everything you do."

Thank you!!
