Why Forecasting Rainfall Amounts is So Difficult

Above is a rainfall map of the last three days for south central Kansas. The orange circle is the location of our home where we receive exactly .25 inches. Of course, we are surrounded by those who received as much as five inches.

So, if you ever wonder why forecasting rainfall amounts (and snow accumulations in winter) is so difficult, just consider the extreme variability in the map above.
