There's been a lot of criticism of Elon's "flying car." Offer these immortal words (via Twitter/X) for your consideration.  HeiLender™ @Heilenderer · 7h Translated from German "The horse will always be there, but the automobile is just a fashion trend – a toy for the rich." Michigan Savings Bank, 1903 "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." Thomas Watson, 1943 "No chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share." Steve Ballmer, 2007 "The Internet has hardly more important effects on the economy than the fax machine." Paul Krugman, 1998 "Flying machines heavier than air are physically impossible." Lord Kelvin, 1895 "The spam problem with emails will be solved in at most two years." Bill Gates, 2004 "The television won't hold up in the market. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every evening." Darryl F. Zanuck, 1946 "There is ...

A Positive Step From the Trump Administration

Image
Scientific American Research scientists are upset because the Trump Administration wants to impose some accountability into the federal research grant system after millions died and the world economy lost trillions because of Dr. Fauci's Wuhan China lab created COVID and released it and after Dr. Fauci tortured thousands of beagles (that lab was closed last year) Dr. Fauci's beagle experiments. Note the closed shades. To quote a WCW report: The lab pumped pneumonia-causing bacteria into over 2,000 beagles' lungs, inducted septic shock and bled them out.  Was Dr. Fauci accountable? Yes, to another scientist.  In my opinion, an ordinary politician would be far more likely to shout STOP! at this type of Josef Mengele-type barbarous, cruel behavior done with our tax dollars  than the "go along to get along" world of science.  Consider: we haven't been able to get a National Disaster Review Board because the National Weather Service used to claim its lame Servic...

Nutrition Science: Say WHAT?!

Image
Go read the headline a second  time. Yes, it says the opposite of what nutritional science has been telling us for 30+ years.  I'm always amused by people who criticize weather science's forecasting ability when nutritional science seems to change almost weekly. For younger readers, this is how bad it got: Of course, more recently, the advice is the opposite. And, remember, nutrition is not a predictive science.  This is also a cautionary example about science from LinkedIn earlier this week: A scientific "consensus" is meaningless. Science is about what can be replicated and proven -- it is in no way a popularity contest.

Proposal to Shut Down the National Center for Atmospheric Research

Image
NCAR's headquarters on Table Mesa near Boulder, Colorado. Courtesy of Dr. Roger Pielke, Jr.  The Trump Administration has proposed to shut down National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) located in the Rocky Mountain foothills (specifically, Table Mesa) near Boulder, Colorado. The usual suspects are furious or think it is "past time." The issue, as I see it, is that NCAR was originally set up to be the nation's premier institution of applied  meteorological research:   thunderstorm safety, and that type of thing. Unfortunately, just a few years after its creation, it was "captured" by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) -- which changed its focus that atmospheric scientists call "basic" research. An example was (and this is real) how much carbon dioxide is released every time a bee farts?  While there is nothing wrong with basic research, we have an imbalance in the U.S. where too much tax money goes to basic research a...

Why Do Incorrect Forecasts Never Deter the Global Warming Alarmists??

Image
Read this, please. I'm not aware of of "East Coast beaches" that disappeared five years ago.  It doesn't matter if it is sea level rise, snow (" a thing of the past "), this year's hurricane season for the United States, or some "tipping point," the fact that these forecasts were radically wrong never pierces their conviction that doom is just around the corner. This is most certainly not  how science works. Science works by making testable predictions that others can also reproduce and observe.

Important Hurricane Forecasting Paper

Image
With the mess this spring with regard to the National Weather Service, especially regarding hurricane forecasting, I have good news. #1. The concern about the microwave data from the DMSP satellite is over. It will continue for the life of the satellite. #2. Even more important is a peer-reviewed paper published last week that demonstrates the importance of the entire suite of hurricane hunter data.  Every American Meteorological Society journal contains a "significance statement" that explains how it advances the science. Here's the statement with this paper: When a tropical cyclone in the Atlantic Ocean is forecast to make landfall in the United States and its territories, the Gulfstream IV (G-IV) aircraft is used to collect data from the environment around the hurricane with the goal of improving the hurricane track forecast. Our study aims to evaluate whether these data improve the track forecasts of hurricanes from 2018 to 2022 by comparing forecasts with these data...

40th Commemoration of the Crash of Delta 191

Image
Courtesy: Ft. Worth Star-Telegram Used with permission Today is the 40th anniversary of the crash at Delta 191 at DFW International Airport. The terrible crash killed 136. Twenty-five were injured; some of the injuries were horrific. The story begins with Dr. Ted Fujita examining the crashes of Ozark Flight 809 in St. Louis (1973) and Eastern Flight 66 at JFK in New York (1975). Ted published a paper in the journal Monthly Weather Review  (February, 1977) hypothesizing the existence of a "downburst" -- a previously undiscovered feature of thunderstorms -- that could cause extreme wind shear which in turn would cause planes to crash.  In the summer of 1978, Ted ran Project NIMROD and found a downburst via radar and measured its characteristics. A couple of weeks later, I was storm chasing with my friend meteorologist Steve Amburn and I was able to take a series of seven photos that -- for the first time -- showed what a downburst looked like and its life-cycle. One of the phot...

Making the ACT Test Science Section Optional?!

Image
Talk about a terrible idea !  The article states: To aspire to be scientists now, students no longer need to know science. They only need to demonstrate what makes for a good performance of science. This benefits everyone—teachers, school boards, textbook publishers, education bureaucrats—except for talented students who are left poorly prepared for science careers. And American science is left the poorer for it. In making its science test optional, ACT has caved to this pernicious trend. Being a scientist with 50+ years working with and managing other scientists, I cannot overemphasize that a terrible idea this is for America as well as all students.  Because I make no secret of the fact I am Catholic, atheists sometimes challenge me as to whether God exists, They scoff when I explain how science points to God. So, I start asking them questions (such as how the earth was formed) almost all of them don't know enough science to have the conversation! This isn't just true o...

Using "Twisters" to Hype Global Warming

Image
You knew global warming alarmists couldn't resist.  "Twisters" publicity shot According to an article in Nature ,  the new movie Twisters  comes out Friday and mostly "gets the science right" about tornadoes and climate change. I have not seen the movie yet (really looking forward to it) and so I am relying on the Nature article to clarify the science.  Tornado Alley Has Shifted to the Southeast Where the Threat is Higher Due to Mobile Homes and Other Factors. This is old news. How old? 49 Years!  In 1975 , Dr. Ted Fujita, along with co-authors Allen Pearson and David Ludlum, documented that tornado alley "shifts," primarily from the Great Plains to the Southeast. Their data went back to 1916. So far in 2024, the Great Plains have had a big tornado year with the Southeast much below normal. Phased Array Radar.  This is not used in real time. It is a research test product and have been in test mode at the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) almost ...

Another Peer-Reviewed Paper Showing Declining Hurricane Numbers

Image
Since every time I post on this topic, I get responses from readers saying, "It is not peer-reviewed" (even though they have been), here is the entire abstract from the journal "Nature Climate Change." There is absolutely no indication that hurricanes have gotten worse with earth's warmer temperatures. Below is the peer-reviewed ACE Index which measures both hurricane duration and intensity.  The ACE Index starts when we first had global weather satellite coverage.  Those telling you that tornadoes and hurricanes have gotten worse in our warmer climate are, at best, wrong. More likely, they are deliberately lying to make global warming seem worse than it is.

Dr. Judith Curry's Video "Hidden" By YouTube

Image
This video, "There is No Climate Emergency" by Dr. Judith Curry -- one of the world's foremost climate scientists --  has been "hidden" by YouTube. That means that when you search for the video, it no longer comes up. See the results of my search, below. When Judy believed that global warming was a potential catastrophe, she was on the front page of the Wall Street Journal  and elsewhere. Over time, she changed her mind based on the complete lack of evidence that global warming is an existential problem. She also agrees with me that forecasting the climate or weather 80 years from now (all of the predictions for the year 2100) is absurd.  For Judy's scientific honesty, she has suffered a great deal professionally. For example, see this headline from Nature ,  which (until it degenerated into a shill for global warming propaganda) was one of the world's most prestigious science publications.  "Turns on her colleagues." Has there ever been a les...

Climate: The Insanity Continues

Image
The problem is that insanity is so taken for granted in climate 'science' (because people are frightened they will be canceled if they tell the truth), that truly dangerous ideas are allowed to survive. I cannot think of a more dangerous thing to do than " dimming the sun " (actually, blotting out sunlight). Far too many who call themselves climate scientists (even though they haven't taken a course in meteorology/climate in their lives) have this simplistic view of the climate that, if you dim the sun, it will cool with no other consequences. That is not true! If you cool the climate, you risk: Not being able to grow enough food. Mass famine may result. Storm violence may increase. F-5 tornadoes are rarer than they have ever been (as far as we know). With colder weather (increasing temperature contrast between pole and equator), it is entirely possible that all types of storms will become stronger.  We know from the weather's reactions to huge volcanic erupti...

How Do Tornadoes Form?

Our friends at Survive-A-Storm Shelters asked me to answer the question, "How Do Tornadoes Form?" You'll find my answers, here . There is still a lot we do not know about how every type of tornado (supercell, landspout, etc.) forms. But, we are making progress. Hope you enjoy reading.

Outstanding Essay: Science and COVID

An absolutely outstanding essay that I highly recommend: click here .  And, if you can get through the paywall, an outstanding editorial from the Wall Street Journal  on the same topic. Did you know there were two new -- likely better -- vaccines for COVID the government is sitting on?

Could This Have Anything To Do With the Fact Physics Has Made No Progress in Nearly 50 Years?

Image
Whether it is The Big Bang Theory  or in magazines about physics theory, many have been discussing the lack of progress in basic physics theory since the 1970's.  It is a topic that has puzzled me until this journal paper was brought to my attention: "Whiteness." Sigh.
